It is. Ive seen multiple enemies multiple times and tbh id argue their more horrifying once you know how they work.

I'm not in any means dogging the game here, but it's not really scary.
Most of the "scary" just comes from knowing you're going into a dark complex and you are probably going to die. Like a solid 70% chance.

The creatures all let themselves be known, save for one that stalks you. Nothing really jump scares you. A lot of the appeal tends to be funny deaths and just effing off with randoms.

I'd say it's more funny than scary.

This is the problem with most "horror" games now. They don't lean into the horror enough because people chicken out. When people say they want "scary" games they usually mean something exactly like this.. it's "scary" at times but they can also overwrite all that with just laughing with their friends and random people. It's more like a "horror-comedy" that people want. Whereas I'd like to have true horror games that don't prey on simple flight or fight instinct but actual fear. There's very few games anymore that achieve that. I think it's because we've moved into this era of people seeing content creators play "horror" games and over-exaggerate their reactions for the comedic value and views. So that's what people want to experience.. but they don't realize it's all acting.

The game is indeed Scary ... there are two main aspects ... first LUCK and second EQUIPMENT ...

if you go in with a flashlight and maybe a zap gun / stungrenade and you have a bit knowledge about the monsters ... you can easily win with less loses and good loot ... but as soon as you go in with nothing ... you are ♥♥♥♥♥♥ ... in many ways ... you mostly dont see ♥♥♥♥ and even the unscariest monster can make your heart jump if you dont see it ... you only hear footsteps and THEN you are dead ...

the LUCK factor is also a big thing ... if you have "Luck" you can get through a map without even meeting a monster and go out with good loot ... but if you are "out of Luck" you can get the scariest ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ monster in the most worst case you can imagine ...

one example ... me and my friends are slightly experienced and we had no money so we had to go in with NOTHING ... we got through the map pretty well and found good stuff ... but the way back to the entrance was long and hard to navigate without light ... me and a friend had a big gear in hands while the one with the biggest balls led us with the Fuse in hand that spends a little light ... we saw a facehugger and an horder so we were prepared that one would die eventually but we knew what we were going for ... then after halfway through we looked into white eyes and we knew ... we are dead ... we survived for 20 seconds only running into another dead-end ... then the time has come *snap* first mate gone *snap* second mate gone and after he killed both my friends in 5 Seconds ... he was gone ... vanished ... I was so scared I alt+f4 out of the game ... because what is up with this ♥♥♥♥♥♥? Killing my friends and then let me life until I die through an heartattack? xD

So yea maybe the game isnt the scarriest all the time BUT it can be very Scary if certain conditions are met! :winter2019coolyul:

I'd argue that doing a backward run with a coil head rushing at you each split second you don't stare at it is kinda scary. Especially when you know there is a bracken around and sudendly a music box join the coil head in front of you and start to plays. Fun times, really.

Of course I'm in for more scary things. A teammate impostor could be reaaaaaly creepy for exemple

I would say its scarier than phasmophobia especially the monsters on the tier 3 moons.
But not as much as Devour.

It's really not that scary. It's more frustrating, difficult and funny(with friends) than it is scary

Just had a game with my friend where we were walking down a dark hallway with an almost dead flashlight, just to hit a dead end. Then, we turned around to find out we've been stalked by a thing with glowing white eyes all the way down the hallway.
It has it's moments. I'm a seasoned horror veteran, but I still jump and squeal when rounding corners into sudden death. It really comes down to if you are investing yourself in the atmosphere and experience.

coop really turns down the scariness factor, being with someone even if the game is alien isolation makes it more fun than scary cuz its a game adn you can just ♥♥♥♥ around with no pressure. single player games on the other hand can really give you the shivers cuz you must take your self control with you, and that's the reason a game like amnesia dark descent even if not really scary monster wise can really make you say "ok now i wanna just hide and pray". then you have alien isolation which is a beast by itself cuz the xenomorph is already scary and you need to play hide and seek with him in small corridors all this ALONE without even npcs which alleviate the scary factor

I think the game needs more stuff forcing you to go alone, like doors that lock behind you. The only time this game does get scary is when all your team mates die. Or you need to separate to cover more ground which is at least what this game has on others.

its a little bit scary, but most of the appeal of the game is being funny and good with your friends
