You can play solo, but it will be difficult. You can always hop on some other peoples public games and make some new friends.

Random players is fun but the player etiquette has started shifting downhill recently.
Every lobby was an enjoyable experience over a week ago, now it is harder to get that same effect.

Tbh what I did was make a lobby and titled it "Idk what im doing" and genuinely nice people will come and help u. Don't be afraid to meet new people its all chill here

Yep. ALready have a group that i now play regularly with and i just joined a random lobby. Try it. One of the few games where you can make friends just by playing with randoms^^

ive played with 2 different groups of randoms and well in both groups we all sent each other freind requests by the end of it so that should answer your question i was worried about how randoms act on here and instead they are all amazeing (my experience may vary from others)

You can solo but it's extremely hard and unfunny. Playing with randoms is ok actually. Community is friendly overall

Even with 2 players I would say the game is not worth playing unless you're both very skilled and willing to play the game more like an esport than a horror experience. Solo is not even worth considering.
