How so? It's really simple.

It stalks you silently, if you look at him he'll retreat away and then follow you again. As long as you don't stare / chase him down you can just keep warding him away. He's only dangerous when you forget or focus on him.

But, I have had cases where Im shining my flashlight on him, look at him for like a second run away pretty far and he still chases. I had times where I'll run around a corner and hell run off or he'll run after me for way too long. I just don't get it.

You have to keep checking on him. You can't just look at him once and then run away. You've overthinking it. If he's chasing you keep track of where he is and check to make sure he's not after you and keep moving.

Dude he can be on the bottom of a staircase, back away cause you saw him as you walk in at the top, break your line of sight and get mad(probably terrain clipping similar to Thumpers seeing you through walls) causing him to run up and kill you.

Ok, so I was confused about how this guy worked as well. I didn't quite know how long you had to look at him, or how long you could look at him.
Spoilers below if you don't want to learn exactly how they work.

Here's how they work:
It only takes a single frame to trigger his "run away" behavior. The INSTANT you see his face , you can look away and he will try to path find away from you. At this point, you are 100% safe for either 3, 11 or 24 seconds.

The short 3 second safe period occurs if you are 8 units close to the brackens "favorite spot". The bracken will try to bring dead players to their favorite spot. This is when the bracken will be very persistent in attacking you.

If you are not close to his favorite spot, its either 11 or 24 seconds. For each 3 times you scare him away, he'll run away for 24 seconds instead of 11. So most of the time he'll run away for 11 seconds.

What I think throws off some players is how the AI pathfinding might actually move him closer towards you after you "scare him off". Players may mistakenly think the bracken is in an angry state when he really isn't. Brackens are designed to find a spot far away from you when they begin their "run away" state, and sometimes this means it has to cross a pathway closer towards you.

Bracken does not teleport. If there's only 1 valid path to you, he will always take that 1 valid path. He cannot teleport around you. But I do not know if more than 1 bracken can spawn at a time.

Bracken opens doors to path through them. You can close doors behind you to know if hes stalking you, as they will open them.

Brackens works by having an angermeter that increases by 1.5 for every second you stare at him. You are 100% safe if the anger meter is below 0.4. But after this safe period, there is about a 13% chance that increases for every second you look at him, and that will trigger him to enter angermode. This is when he charges right at you and tries to kill you.

If the anger meter is above 0.4, the probability of an attack is 0.09f * (EachSecondYouStareAtHim * 1.5) * 100. The odds increase quickly the longer you stare at him. This might be why he feels inconsistent as there's a bit of a dice roll after he builds up more than 0.4 anger meter. Sometimes you can stare at him a bit longer, but sometimes you will roll a bad result on that random number generator.

Bracken has a chance to enter a staredown state when you look at him. This is when he completely 100% stops moving and you are staring at each other. You've already angered him quite a bit if he's doing this, look away immediately.

whats broken about it? in multiplayer, look at it for a second and look away simple as that. id say its greatly designed because it factors in your teammates watching it as well, so everyone needs to be on the same page when it comes to a bracken.

yea but the issue is if you so much as have a spec of the bracken in the corner of your screen it counts. plus pipes dont seem to block him and the fact that the game pares him with other foes like spring head which is a scp clone really makes him less of a challenge and more of the game trying to make the game hard when its not in a cheep ass way
