Proximity chat and stealth/sneaking

Genuinely curious in whether or not proximity chat has an effect on gameplay when it comes to AI detecting you. I've had moments where I thought it did with the big meat dogs and other times where I felt like it didn't matter at all with Thumpers and other enemies. Just want to know so I can tell whether or not to shut up when they are nearby.

thumpers are deaf, dogs are blind. Though besides dogs, talking usually wont get you killed. If something is close enough to hear you, it was probably about to see you if it didnt already
