what does excess mana mean?

For example gaining 50 mana when your at 75/100 mana you have 25 excess mana which then deals that much damage to your leader.

I think that one is supposed to be used with perks that give you starting max mana.

yeah, been there. got it on like my first or second run ever lol. was so excited for more starting mana and then so confused.

If you set the game to start paused, as a wizard, you might be able to survive this by playing mana batteries right away before the first tick of the game? I -think- the manaburn is processed at the end of the tick. Could be wrong though!
