Imagine having friends that don't live in your house, amiright
(Unironically the only people I would play this with live in my house)

Have you tried Remote Play Together?

I think if I'm to pick one of the two, and the game doesn't fully require fullscreen for one player (i.e. playable with mouse only), then I'd rather local + remote play than online only and require multiple PCs if I want to play it with someone who came over.

To protest this as bad because "it's 2023" is just plain ignorant and rude.

I do remote play, which gets you remote co-op. Works like a charm.

We only really play local multiplayer games together, rather than sitting alone in a room talking into a mic.

because steam remote play sucks major ass, its not a hassle to implement an online co-op function, for people who want to play with their friends who live in other country's, so one doesn't have to use a buggy steam feature you absolute ♥♥♥♥, hope your daughter gets ran over

Local co-op is good for playing with local friends and local girlfriend =)
Nowadays with all the tech and good internet speeds online co-op is not so hard to implement as splitscreen, IF you start creating the game with that in mind. IF not (as in this case), adding sync for all enemies, players, separating game logic - is a nightmare.

Some people still have families, friends and relatives who live togeher or visit each other and having physical offline time together.

The Matrix has you, you should come offline sometimes, you dont even know anything but online.

this game does not work online, you have to feel each other!

There's literally a built in feature called Remote play on steam to play with people who do not have the game.
Because the fun of 4 players on the living room playing a Nintendo Switch multiplayer game is light years away from your dumb online multiplayer, kid.
