Since it's my 700th game on Steam, I decided to celebrate such an auspicious event with a review. The Overlord Isn't Another Isekai Protagonist, Is He? (Isekai for short) is about your average guy who one day finds himself having died and turned into an incubus, which leads to him getting involved in all sorts of wacky shenanigans with his new fiendish friends and potential lovers.
  I'm trying to avoid spoilers here, so let me just say that the game is ripe with intriguing individuals and legit head-scratchers that will be uncovered slowly as you progress along the main storyline. All of the characters are infinitely adorkable, every single one of them, starting with the protagonist. The mix of the otherworldly and the mundane is captivating, and their personalities shine throught text, voice, and visual design alike.
  Having read several hundred visual novels in my lifetime, I'll be honest, I find this project weirdly endearing because I know how easy it is to make some low-effort 3d ero stuff for Patreon and rake in the money, but for some reason, Isekai doesn't follow that tempting path. It is genuine and inventive, and that's probably what speaks to me the most at this point in my life. Let's see if this bet turns out to be a winning one.

  This game is a fashion statement. Just from the title alone I could've expected a generic fantasy world (nothing wrong with that by the way), but it's quite bold in both character design and its chosen colour scheme – hellish neon cyberpunk with that sweet drop of pure weebness. The animations are nice as well, some more detailed than others, but most importantly, not too overdone (you know those cases of tentacle hair living its best life separately from the character, or breathing and stretching metal armour plates).
  Not everything is perfect though, and a few of the more detailed backgrounds look a bit like something you would find in a Hidden Object game. It's probably a matter of blending several art pieces together, although I'm not sure if this is even something people would be paying close attention to, huh.
  One more aspect that could use some work is the "exploration phase" when we are given an opportunity to study the location and receive lore bits and character related commentary. The action points that trigger them are currently barely visible which, together with the previously mentioned overly-detailed backgrounds, sometimes comes close to pixel-hunting for that one last hex.

  Of course, it would be disingenuous not to mention the current state of the game. It's perfectly playable and perfectly functional, but first of all, it's Unity, not Ren'Py or some 10+ old proprietary Japanese engine, so it has its hiccups. Good news is, it has all the potential to become BETTER than Ren'Py and include more QoL and accessibility features because of the powerhouse that is Unity and its massive libraries.
  Second of all, yeah, you might encounter bugs, glitches, suspiciously long loading times, missing screens and obvious placeholders here and there, especially with the UI. No hard/soft blocks as far as I'm concerned, so that's a huge plus. The graphics can sometimes be a little blurry, but that might be because I'm running the game in 1280x720, so that's something that not everyone might even experience.
  In the end, I think I wanted to give it a try precisely because I can feel prideful ambitions where the authors could've just settled for serviceable mediocrity. Behind the rawness of the EA release you can already see a colourful cast of characters and a pretty inventive game process, the voice actors are definitely having a blast, and the episodic nature of the game makes it possible to enjoy every single story update together with leaps in technical polish.

Can't wait for the full release — quite a promising project. It will surely satisfy a hunger for an exciting story with spicy moments :)

For now The Overlord Isn't Another Isekai Protagonist, Is He? doesn't have any negative reviews and though I have tooo many things to whine about I honestly don't want to discourage the dev. The game is still in an early access phase, so I'm gonna write a neutral review with a thumb-up авансом)) believing in this novel's potential. I'll edit my review when the game is totally finished and hopefully has a guide.

Praises:
+Art! (♥ω♥*) chars are so pretty they're just breathtaking. Such novels again remind me of that old dilemma: what's more important in this genre of games Visual or actually Novel part. Although again I personally think that some CGs were less appealing than sprites, visually it's exceptionally attractive.

--MC was annoying af. Typical :( and here I think my irritation is connected with the writing, the way the story is presented. Maybe it's gonna be explained later but for that part that I had, sorry, but I didn't understand at all why he was SO difficult, why he refused to survive in that world. It's not like he was a virgin or there was no suitable candidates to save his incubus ass but... instead he chose some slow stupid suicidal path. The way Lux had to babysit him all the time annoyed me to no end. I didn't see any inner internal struggle connected to his idea of not belonging there. Sorry, all his motivation, reasoning of his actions was beyond me. As usual, I admit maybe it's not MC, maybe it's me who's stupid not seeing the obvious but... (－‸ლ)

--At first that heavy French accent of one of the chars annoyed me a lot, plus he used so many French words, I was furious, so much text was beyond my understanding. That feeling of not getting his emotions, was like being a dog, just watching his intonation, minding the context but not seeing the whole picture. Not a very pleasant experience. I recollected 'War and Peace' with loooots of French text there but there were footnotes all the time explaining the meaning. Though truth be told soon I was totally enchanted with that char and started finding him too attractive to remain annoyed. My annoyance changed into sadness. I truly would like to understand every his word. Yeah, some expressions sounded very similar to English but not all of them.

--'typos'. Language-wise I don't have a lot to complain about but it's still not perfect. Oh, and one more thing, ideally pronounced and written texts should match. The voice actor calls one char 'he', for example, but in the text it's 'they'.

--I dislike settings in this game. First, I couldn't set the ideal screen size, when I believed I found the perfect variant, I was annoyed I couldn't find the options while playing. It turned out that line of settings is under the text box but it was cut in that screen resolution T_T So I had to choose smth much smaller. It's not like it's the first game I play with such small 'window' but here having such gorgeous visuals it's almost a crime to make me play this way. Sorry, I don't understand anything in technical part of creating games. I just want to start, open it to the full with just one click and enjoy...

--I was so excited to see the option to choose the font size but the way it was shown as an example in the settings and in fact differed greatly.

--save slots are just disastrous T_T First of all they are tooo small, I don't see what's there what I saved, with many choices it's significant. It's esp annoying that they take some small part in the center of the screen :( Why leave so much space unused?! Plus, every time I reached save slots it was page one aaaa so I had to click to the necessary page all the time. Plus, I don't know why but the final page always showed the previous page, so I had to click further, then come back and only then it indicated the correct slot. No idea why but it just added to useless clicking.

--It's not just a 'pure' novel the way I prefer. It has some point-&-click elements, puzzles. At first I was excited how interesting and easy to do everything was. I enjoyed that feature until I started my second playthrough. (－‸ლ) I got stuck in the room with the photos. While skipping I lost all the thread of the plot, before it wasn't difficult at all but second time I clicked all the options so many times but with lots of names and other choices I just was stuck. Nothing happened. I wasted so much time. So I just decided to give up and wait for the guide for the whole game.

--inventory. I wish I could read what's there. In my second playthrough I took some new items while skipping I kinda lost some of the immersion and then I was gazing at those tiny pic trying to decipher what they actually mean but failed :(

--clicking 'skip' if it's unread it doesn't proceed the text :( why doesn't it work like any simple clicking?! So I have to reclick in some other part of the screen wasting time and always late to realize I've already read that and can continue skipping again :(

So, while playing most often I was annoyed and frustrated but I still want to believe for the sake of my hot Lux ;) that when it's fully released it'll be just beyond any praise. I sincerely wish 'Good luck' to the dev.

For anyone who doesn't know an Isekai is a subgenre of fantasy in which a character is suddenly transported from their world into a new or unfamiliar one.

Imagine; you wake up in a strange place, you have a splitting headache, you don't remember how you got there (or much of anything really), and there, standing in front of you are two very colourful, skimpy-dressed demonesses. What is the first thing you think? That you passed out from drinking too much and there must be a cosplay convention nearby? Not only are you likely sane, but you also share the same thought process as our charming protagonist, Kay!

A young man in his mid 20's awakes with no recollection of his life, how he got here, or even his name; all he knows is that he's got a throbbing headache, his back and tailbone are killing him, and there are two girls nearby musing over him. The two try to explain the situation to him while he logically tries to think about what might have happened to him. He's obviously panicked and when the girls ask what to call him, he mutters an "Okay" while trying to think. Both women mistake this to mean his name is Kay, and with no alternative, this becomes his new name. He is then informed he is in hell and has been reincarnated as an incubus. Despite not remembering anything, Kay is sure someone has made a mistake and that he doesn't belong here, especially as a sex demon. Things become too much for him when he's told all that pain his body feels is from his newly gained horns, tail and wings (which are smaller than most incubi possess), he passes out and from there, we are launched into the near future where Kay has already had some time to process and be forced to assimilate into his new role.

The bulk of the story revolves around Kay desperately trying to get his case looked at. He whole-hearted believes someone has made a mistake. This fact is made more apparent as he feels no desire to gain lust energy from sleeping around; quite the opposite. Unfortunately for him, refusing to do this means having his life force drained instead. He's constantly tired and looks like a mess. Trying to find evidence that he shouldn't have been sent to hell, he inadvertently drags his new acquaintances into a far bigger, far more dangerous plot. This only gets worse when Lady Lust herself takes an interest in her new demon.

Kay is often tired and teased (or outright bullied) by his peers. Although he now does not need to do so, he clings to his humanity by practising daily routines such as sleeping, showering and even brushing his teeth. He's generally got a whiney personality, is a bit of a hopeless romantic, has an affinity for catgirls and video games and has a single-minded determination to get out of this (literal) hell-hole.

Kali and Shay are the two demonesses that were there when Kay originally awoke in his new world. The two girls are sisters but their personalities are polar opposites. Shay comes across as a bubbly, friendly and sensitive person. She's always right there with her positive attitude and determination to help. Kali on the other hand takes on a far more aggressive approach. She is quick to insult and has a short temper. Getting her to open up and be upfront will prove quite the challenge. Despite this, the two are very close and are often seen together. As imps, they have a lower hierarchy than incubus/succubus.

Etienne, or Tien for short is a reaper, or well, a former reaper. After screwing up big time, not once but twice, Lady Lust demoted him. He now has the unfortunate fate of being Kay's babysitter- er I mean handler. Sporting a simpable French accent, quick wit and a sharp tongue, he's a force to be reckoned with even without his scythe. His distinguishing features are his bone-like tail and large Doberman ears, but never call him Doggy.

Lux is a floating lump of coal-type creature and Kay's familiar. Not much is known about familiars in hell as they are rare, apart from the fact they are lost souls that are forced to serve. Despite this, Lux is more of a bully to Kay, always mocking him but when push comes to shove... well, he's not always there to help. Shortly into the story, Lux transforms into a more humanoid shape claiming some pretty outrageous things. I won't spoil it though!

The Overlord Isn't Another Isekai Protagonist, Is He? is fully voiced in English with outstanding quality by talented actors; each hitting the right tones at the right time. I was very surprised by the standard in such a low-priced VN.

In this novel, hell is a damned reflection of Earth. You have all the standards and technology Earth has in a darker, gaudy, cyberpunk theme. The art style, both the backgrounds and sprites show this off in an outstanding level of gorgeously detailed aptitude that can be classed as a feast for the eyes. The dark undertones with the bright flashes of colour, whether that be neon signs or unnatural hair colour work really well together to draw you into the world.

This is a mature game and does have sexual content (if being a newly made incubus didn't give that away) but it is neither forced upon you nor just there for the sack of it; it links into the story seamlessly and comes with its own struggles for Kay. Remember, he doesn't want to be a sex demon and he actively fights against it, but we can't always fight our nature! As for what you can expect, it's well-written, steamy and enjoyable content. Just don't expect too much as this is only the early access game and things are fairly tame, for now at least, I can't comment on how things will unfold further down the line, but I am confident that things will only get better with time!

Another thing of note is that from time to time you'll come across a point-and-click type puzzle. As Kay, you will have to search the area and piece together information and find clues to move forward. Nothing challenging but it adds that nice degree of variety to the game as well as makes your presence feel more validated. In addition to this aspect of the game, I also found a seemingly optional, easy, hidden object game (I'm unsure if it is mandatory or there for an additional scene as it happened right before the end of the early access) as well as a simple combat section. All of these little things add an enjoyable impact overall and give the sense of taking a more active stance within the story.

But, would I recommend The Overlord Isn't Another Isekai Protagonist, Is He?? 100% yes! This VN may be in early access but it is far more polished and promising than a lot of other games I have played in the past. It offers so much high-quality work for a very low price (that price is subject to change for the full release, however). If you are even the slightest bit interested, I'd say get it!

Looking at the title, I can’t blame anyone for thinking The Overlord Isn't Another Isekai Protagonist, Is He? is just another isekai game, but that couldn't be further from the truth. It's an engaging visual novel full of twists and important choices where we play as an amnesiac guy who just arrived in Hell and has to get used to his new life as an incubus as well as recover the memories of his past life. Part of why it's so enjoyable is because of the depth of the cast and how likable they are. They all grow on you in one way or another, including the ever-cranky Etienne.

However, this VN stands out because of its originality. The gameplay has the usual features, such as multiple choices that affect the story, while also including a bit of everything from other genres; dating sim elements, hidden object games, turn-based combat, etc. There's also the setting; it's the first time that someone makes a game that takes place in a cyberpunk-styled hell.

Did I mention the production values of the game are through the roof? They nailed the cyberpunk aesthetic, and the fitting synthwave tracks and top-notch voice acting sure add to the experience. Moreover, the characters are so beautiful they would make every straight person question their sexuality. You can even pick whether the protagonist likes guys, girls, or both.

In short, the game is so good you're doing a disservice to yourself by not playing it. It's worth every single cent and second spent on it, even if only the first chapter and a bit of the second one are currently out.

I went into this game expecting a completely different experience than I got. I expected more of a very low effort porn game that had barely sensible plot. What I got out of it was an expansive and very enjoyable adventure into the hierarchy of hell and how a lowly incubus navigates the mystery of being in hell when he shouldn't.

There's a lot of mystery in the game that keeps you interested in finding the different clues. The characters are really enjoyable and I love that you can go after both guys and women.

The art is breathtaking and honestly blows me away for the price being as low as it is. When I reached the end of the early access I was very genuinely disappointed because I was so hooked on the story.

Now the naughty scenes are really fun too. The CGs are pretty simple but combined with the text and voice acting make quite the scene. From a female standpoint as well, I appreciate how you can simply say I don't want to fantasize about Kalli and Shay and simply be friends. But in my own opinion, id like there to be another female option to romance besides them. Simply because they feel too much like friends to view them any differently.

All in all though, I'd give this game a 10/10. Im surprised it isn't more popular, especially for women.

The graphics are cool. The characters look cute and varied. The sprites are animated.

There is a full-fledged voice acting (cool voice acting, I liked it).

It is not always obvious what to pick on the locations, but it's still not that difficult.

You can play with one hand, which is undoubtedly a plus.

The VO is fantastic! 😍 it's also FULL English VO which is more than some high budget games have out there, and I'm not even talking about visual novels.

The Overlord isn't another Isekai Protagonist, is He? is a Unity based visual novel.

You play as Kay, a guy who died at the ripe old age of 25. You wake up to Kali and Shay standing over you. You discover you are in Hell and are now an incubus.

One of the first decisions you make is if you are interested in girls, guys, or both. This will allow you to tailor the content to your tastes. You are given a "warning" anytime adult content will be viewed as to what kind of adult content it is.

It isn't until about four hours into the game that you finally know how the game got its name. It isn't until about four and a half hours in that you can actually explore the world on your terms.

I normally use the save game slots to save when a choice comes up. This allows me to go to any point in the story and select a different choice. Unfortunately the choice screens are so dark it is difficult to see what/where you are when you make a choice, from the save game slots. After the big reveal it seems that the save option is removed from the choice selection screen and you have to go back prior to the selection screen to save. While this now gives you a good visual of what was going on at the save point it doesn't show you the choices.

The game ends rather abruptly after about five hours of play time.

A well-drawn and fully voice Visual Novel. Heavy on the story, light on scenes. As this game is early access there is no guarantee that it will progress, or how. So far, updates have been coming.
