How safe is using the flashlight?
Does anyone know if the flashlight's first rev is quieter than subsequent ones? Or what kind of range it has? Is the first rev ever safe, or do you have to rev it all the way for it to make enough noise for the beast to hear?

I haven't looked into how it's set up in the .hpl files yet, but it feels pretty safe to use on Hard. I tend to fully wind it up in the safehouse, then wind it once every twenty seconds or so on my way to where I'm going and have never once done a wind up that directly summoned it.
i think the monster reacts to flashlight if you are near the hole its in

I don't know if it was a coincidence, but at one point in the room with all the lockers I had revved the flashlight twice and the beast immediately appeared in the tunnel before wandering in--luckily I escaped with my life but only just barely. It was also my first encounter with it and I got an achievement.

Yes, I'm playing on Hard.

If you want to see while being "stealthy" 2 Pulls will make it glow enough for you to look quickly. 1 Is never good because it goes off immediately after. 3 If you think you're far away from any hole.

Two pulls is enough. Any further than that is pointless.
One pull = 3 seconds duration.
Two pulls = 30 seconds duration.
Three or more = No effect.

So surely one pull is quieter than two, right? Also, does the flashlight make noise when it's on or only when you rev it?

One pull isn't enough to actually keep it working long enough, While it "makes" noises It is only when (seemingly) You Crank it that the monster gets alerted, Though i wouldn't have my flashlight out in the first place if you were hiding from the monster 😉)

I'm trying to figure out if it could be worth it to maybe crank the light once when the beast is nearby just to help get my bearings for a moment, but not if it makes the same amount of noise as winding the crap out of it. I would assume that since the developers made the first crank last so little, it probably actually doesn't make nearly as much noise.

If the monster is outside of the wall's then it's just better to hide (or run) Rather than crank, since it WILL come to you quicker than you will realize what is around you.

Outside of the walls? So it can't hear the flashlight if it's in the walls?

If you do it too much yes, It will hear. It's actually a good tactic to draw it out using the flashlight before running away into another section, However once outside the walls EVERY Sound will be heard and you will be begging for mercy.

Well, I've already searched Maintenance, the Prison, and most of the central area and I definitely don't think it hears *every* noise. For example there's a lot of wooden debris on the ground but I seem to be able to push it around without much issue, and footsteps while crouched don't seem to make much noise unless the beast is directly in contact with you It'll be interesting to see exactly how nuanced the system really is.
