Dumping items in the safe room
Is there any downside to just dumping your stuff on the floor once the storage box is full? Like do items despawn, move around or anything like that? If not I don't really understand why the storage box even has a limit.

I went into some tunnels and came back and my grenades were gone, so it seems risky.

I put stuff on the ground in my playthrough and didn't notice anything go missing, but I also didn't pay careful attention to those resources (until endgame I just dumped cloth/bottles on the ground) and played the game in one sitting. Towards the end when I was had lots of resources, I had fun decorating a bit, but I wish you could pick up and rotate/move gatherable items.

Probably keep your most important and valuable items inside the box, and if you need to put stuff on the ground, put the common items first, just in case.

I didn't notice anything go missing. But when I dumped my meat on the ground I came back one time and there was a rat vibing in the room.

Items do not despawn, even when exiting the game, however dropped meat will be eaten by rats and grenades, bandages, bottles and such can and will roll to some dark corner of the room or under the tables/shelves or even under the storage box itself, but they do not despawn.
This makes me wonder why the hell they ended up with the idea of a limited storage box.

Same, there's really no point to it.

I put my bandages in the Admin Office drawer and closed it, they despawned but the items in the adjacent drawer that was left open did not.

I've filled up the generator room with spare gas cans and they're always still there when I reload the game.

Before the final sequence, I went back to the safe room and picked up some spare bandages from the very beginning of the game. I think it's safe to say placed/dropped items are okay.

I kinda dig the limited inventory space as it reminds me of resident evil. But the fact that you can't combine fuel cans and instead have to tote around a dozen 1/15th full cans back and forth is annoying.

There's an achievement for not dropping any items, but other than that no, the game will remember everything you've dropped in the safe room.
