Rebirth was very much focused on story, it was driven by narrative and was (I do believe) designed to further explain and tie into The Dark Descent. This is one reason, be honest with yourself, that the general gamer bro playerbase craps on this game. They weren't wanting to dive into this game to get immersed in a story or feel for characters, they wanted to be scared and have more survival horror agency.
Bunker was definitely made with a focus on gameplay and narrative took a back seat to fun mechanics and replayability. This isn't to say that there isn't a story or atmosphere, there is, but it's not as deep or varied as Rebirth and doesn't need to be for this type of game. This game isn't as slow and steady, it focuses more on moment to moment encounters and feels like a race against time for survival.
As somebody who's been playing all of the Amnesia games since TTD came out, I truly enjoy both for what they ARE and thinks it's quite silly to hate on both for what they AREN'T. Rebirth doesn't NEED to be a technical survival horror game and Bunker doesn't NEED to be a very deep interconnected story, they both excel in the different experiences they offer... I just truly don't understand why people can't be a little more objective and look at a game and say: oh this one isn't really for me and walk away, recognizing that it's still a good game and not bash it.
Fast forward today and this type of gameplay is more or less fullfilled with Amnesia: the bunker so I'm happy.
They took all the tropes of amnesia and instead of arbitrary "now you gotta stop playing the game to do the chore of hiding" it's dynamic cause and effect. The story is riddled in the environment not shoved down the players throat
Many content creators abandoned Rebirth halfway through (even the guys that made their careers on these games)
Many content creators are saying you need to play and finish Anmesia Bunker. It is massive step up in the survival horror genre (which sounds a lot like when Dark Decent happened...weird)
You're right this is a hot take...
Many people have abandoned these guys after A Machine for Pigs, and Rebirth. Everyone's saying it's time to come back now, and I agree. There is nothing as tight as the bunker, as second guessing of your choices (IN A HORROR GAME) as the bunker
THAT IS NOT THE ONLY THING THAT CONNECTS THIS GAME TO THE AMNESIA FRANCHISE.
LIKE EVERYONE HAS BEEN TRYING TO TELL YOU BUT YOU ARE TOO STUPID AND A LIAR TO KNOW, BECAUSE IF YOU DID PLAY OR WATCH YOUTUBE VIDEOS ABOUT AMNESIA, YOU'D KNOW THAT THE ROMAN TUNNELS, ARE NOT ROMAN BUT ARE ANCIENT RUINS FROM THE OTHER WORLD.
YOU KNOW?
FROM AMNESIA REBIRTH????
The cause of the Monster is actually Lambert that drunk the ghoul juice from the ruins and Transformed into the beast.
You'd know this if you got to the Roman Tunnels propper or watched a video about the game.
If anything this game follows Rebirth more than TDD or even Machine For Pigs.
There's an easter egg of the Darkness in the Arena bossfight and Grunts from TDD in the Roman Tunnels otherwise there is more references to the Queen, to the Other world and even a bit of references to Alexander.
So no, it's not just Herni has Amnesia which is a good enough reason since the game is called AMNESIA, not "The Other World: Game about spookys and has protagonists with Amnesia usually"
