I don't know if anyone has tried this but is it possible to free the prisoner or can we only kill/leave him to slow starve to death? cause the whole life preserver achievement involves "saving" him even though we are just leaving him to his fate in an old bunker with a monster who can make holes in the walls with rats that like to eat human flesh alive or dead.

just though it was kinda silly, in fact the better outcome for the poor guy is probably just shooting him in that situation to save him suffering a fate worst than death or being mauled.

Well after the ending, it might mean that the bunker could be found shortly by others afterwards. It's not impossible to think of that he could be saved but it's really up in the air.

To be honest I though of that as well but then I sort thought why would they care to enter the bunker at all cause it looks more like they were doing a charge more than anything so i doubt they would have checked the bunker after finding Henri, but also there is that fact that the prisoner could have been killed not to long after you go down the hole after using the dynamite or any point after leaving the prison. as it is shown that the creature makes those holes in the walls like the ones in the other prison cells and much like the one that later appears in the Saferoom.

Why didn't the beast kill him while in the cell? It looks like there is a rat hole behind him when I look into the cell from the outside.

No clue but it often appeared right after you enter its lair.
