You can play the Bunker without having played the other games.

Nah, it is its own story. Amnesia The Dark Descent was the first in the entire series, came along with Amnesia A Machine for Pigs which was the second after Descent, then came out Amnesia Rebirth, which is a direct sequal to The Dark Descent, so you can just play The Bunker with no history of those other games.

This is in Amnesia The Dark Descent? I have not beaten it yet, but this is what I was told.

The lore of the other realm and the shadow is heavily hinted at in notes, it is absolutely all written to tie back to the Orb, and the Dark Descent as a whole. I could tell you more but I will spoil the story. Find out for yourself!
