"Military horror" games?
So, I have this game on my wishlist, but I'm waiting for the price to drop since I have Aliens Isolation to play first. However, I really like the theme of 'military horror'; i.e. a horror game (supernatural or mundane) in a military setting. The idea of your sanctuary becoming your tomb would've been true for too many WWI soldiers, and many WWII ones as well (e.g. the Flakturme). Are there any other games that capture a similar theme? And would A Machine for Pigs be good starting point for the series, since industrial horror is pretty close to military horror?

Heard Machine for Pigs is very linear and not much "gameplay" going on. Darkwoods has a military aspect to it, is an alternate history 1970s eastern Europe and very much horror. It definitely has government / military hijinks going on behind the scenes.

-Alien vs Predator (Atari Jaguar) might be one of the first Military survival horror games, I'm not sure. And there are quite a few examples of industrial horror from games during the PSX and Sega Saturn era.

I've had Darkwood in my library for awhile from Humble, but never played it before because I wasn't sure what the game actually WAS. However, the idea of turtling in your house I Am Legend style sounds cool; the more I read about it the more fun it sounds.

For me Darkwood is a gem. It is my favorite survival horror game, hands down. I would highly urge you to give it a good try.

I would just add two tips hidden behind spoiler tags, if you wanted to go in completely blind:

#1 My first attempt at Darkwood ended in frustration, because unlike modern games, there is very little hand holding. Your journal provides hints, sometimes vague, as to what you should do next. You may not notice it is being updated.

#2 To progress the story, you have to explore far beyond your hideout. I spent a long time on that initial play through just fortifying and hunkering down in my hideout.

More like a shooter, but the level design is interesting in a World War I setting

A Machine for Pigs was an independently-developed game using Frictional's engine, but it's in no way important in terms of continuity. For the most part, don't worry about previous games. This one does make some references to the original Amnesia, but they're minor and not particularly important to the plot.

Also, to be honest, AMfP was a very weak entry in the series. I'd play it last, if at all. There is a bit of an industrial environment in parts of AMfP, mostly late 19th century, but their first game (Penumbra) also has industrial environments from multiple eras (all very similar to The Bunker in feel).

In general, I'd say just dive straight in with The Bunker. If you enjoy that, there's more to try out that came before it, ranging from gothic (Amnesia) to industrial horror (Penumbra and maybe a little bit AMfP) to sci-fi horror (SOMA, possibly their best game of all). It's all horror though - that's sort of Their Bag.
