How to deal with rats

I needed to go to the maintenance room to get a wrench, but there are just rats everywhere, even rats in a tunnel. I threw a grenade in there but it didn't wipe them all out and I just had to suffer taking damage. I heard you can throw bricks at them but I just don't seem to be finding bricks

Use a stick with cloth and light it on fire and chase them away. It's the best way to get past many rats at once.

I don't have a lighter and I've explored all the spaces I can so far and haven't found it

That's unfortunate. The only other way to get rid of an rat corpse would be to dunk the corpse with gas and light it on fire using a flare, but it's noisy and very resource expensive. You might want to see if you haven't missed an code somewhere, the lighter is almost imperative for getting past the rat tunnel in my experience.

Rats are worse than the beast. And despite there being scrap wood all throughout the bunker, sticks are one of the most rarest resources to find. All the other wood you see in the game is useless. After 4 or 5 hours in the game I have found only 3 sticks, which means that is all the torches I could ever make. The game blows really.

If you have full health you can tank the rat tunnel. Just sprint through, remember to crouch under the beam, and quickly heal once you come out the other side. Two bandages or one medkit should get you back up to full. This works on hard so it should work on all lower difficulties too.

It's pretty tight though, I'm pretty sure you can't be damaged at all when you begin. You need to have 100% full health.
