No need for a "final decision", whatever you come up with, you can't make everyone happy. Some like long cycles and hence more relaxed gameplay, others like the challenge of being under time pressure.
My suggestion, leave the decision to the player. Make it an option, so that each player can chose the cycle length from very short to very long.
A thing to consider though: Of course the length of cycle affects the difficulty. With longer day you can find more resources per day and you would also get hungry no so quickly. Therefore I would also suggest to make the availability of resources and the rate of hunger and thrust also optional.
Spend all day building a fire > Spend all night swinging a flaming stick at dogs > Repeat
Makes me worried that the developer has no idea what they're doing.
Yeh it gets tedious and a bit too harsh.
Just now my night was almost over when my fire turned into glowing coal... I threw some need wood on it but to no avail... darkness claimed me... even though I sucessfully kept the beasts at bay. Didn't feel right.
