It's extremely unrealistic to have a full day ending in like 10 minutes.
I do love the game, but I think many will consider the gameplay way too stressful to be fun.
This game would work so much better with a proper save game like in Alyx. So I don't have to start all over again ... and again ... and again... Having to start all over from scratch when you die gets old quickly... What works in Underdogs is a bit different when being Robinson Crusoe... :-)
Maybe add some possibility to accelerate time when wanted for those playing on Easy...
Without them, you will get tired of starting over every time.
You need to make a campaign mode with saves and a survival mode.
If I had to guess, the day/night cycle is so short so that you don't notice that there's not really any content or anything to do, because if you had time to explore you'd just find an empty island and no mechanics. So they make the game loop just be you struggling to drink some coconuts and start a fire every day.
From what I'm hearing, the endless version of the demo is literally identical to the release version. So still no building, no crafting, no nothing except scrambling to make a fire and then kiting dogs all night.
Guess this is getting taken off my wishlist.
How long can a person survive if you cannot get any sleep? - No sleep is not very realistic and does break immersion. Fine having a few nights with no sleep, but you need to be able to find or make a place where you can sleep safely. If such a place is hidden in the game, I'd like to know :-)
I guess most of us are here for the adventure and exploration - too much focus on pure survival reduces exploration and takes the fun out of the game.
With no inventory the constant running for coconuts, food and wood gets old fast. Reminds me of the fate of Sisyphus:
"The term Sisyphean describes a task that is impossible to complete. It refers to the punishment that Sisyphus receives in the underworld, where he is forced to roll a boulder up a hill repeatedly for eternity."
In short, my wishes:
1. A much longer day.
2. A place to sleep safely.
3. A bag for the stuff I find.
To run, I need to constantly push down the Index thumbstick - these can be fragile, and constant use may increase risk of drifting - would be better with a toggle instead (and I'll check later if I somehow missed that setting).
I can confirm you that we are working on a patch to make the daytime longer, so that the game feel less stressful.
The Early Access version of Bootstrap Island is not content complete and will receive new areas, monster and items with upcoming updates. However, compared to the demo that we released last year, the EA version has much more content (areas, items, animals), new systems, mechanics etc. Some things we have been working on are not instantly obvious and you have to explore to find them.
As for running, there is a setting in the in-game menu for toggling sprint, so that you can switch to running with just one button press and don't have to hold down the stick.
Awesome - could not ask for much more, especially that toggle I overlooked :-) You have gold in your hands - with the right design, this can be one of the finest VR experiences.
