This team also has lots of nice ideas, but rarely does them well enough.
They clearly did their best on this game though
I get it, Team Ninja is working on Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, and might not have the staff to tackle 2 major projects, so this project was given to another team.
This game needs to be mechanically tight and precise to be a good Monster Hunter-like title, and Team Ninja has a track record of doing this reasonably well. If the timings are loose, then the challenge will be trivial for anyone experienced in action based games.
They appear to have gotten feedback and weightiness of attacks down pretty well, according to Arekks, which is something that Monster Hunter Rise was lacking, IMO, when Monster Hunter World got it right.
Early versions of the game appear to have severe performance/optimization issues, which isn't uncommon, however it could spell disaster if they don't fix these problems by launch. If they don't have the expertise to solve these problems, then they need to sub contract it out to someone who can fix it.
IMO, nobody has managed to do a good Monster Hunter-like game who's not Capcom.
The games are either too loose, or it's missing other key elements to where the game lacks sufficient depth.
Nobody really tried either. The only other monster hunter copies are dauntless and toukiden
But yeah, nobody actually tried hard I think.
To be frank, I think Team Ninja would rather make a pure action game instead of a monster hunting game. That's their expertise.
Although I do have to say that Team Ninja did have a hand in Toukiden, part of the team helped with designing that game. Toukiden was a joint project of many Koei Tecmo studios, headed by OmegaForce.
I mean monster hunter is essentially just a boss rush game, especially rise. It makes sense that they would want to do something bigger.
Wild hearts seems like the first one to try making a good one though. From what I've seen so far it could even be better if they succeed.
