BREAKING: This just in! Hunting RPGs aren't all just "Monster Hunter" clones!
EDIT 2: Friends, it has been an honor engaging with you in this thread and giving you all awards. But the game has finally released for me. I'll see you all on the other side!

EDIT: Since all I'm doing is wasting time before the game releases, any comment that evokes a reaction out of me will get a Steam award. Outside of that, I'll probably stop doing it when I can play the game.

Okay, I don't really care about all this discourse about whether the game is jank or what not. I just bought, it's preloaded, and in a few hours, I'll play it and most likely love it.

Monster Hunter is it's own thing, but so is Toukiden (which this game is a "spiritual successor" of), God Eater, Freedom Wars, Soul Sacrifice, Dauntless, and literally any else that combines action game combat with fighting large monsters. They all exist within the subgenre of action games called "Hunting RPGs." Hunting RPGs is just a term I use that best describes these types of games. They aren't hunting sims like the old school Cabela's games, or games like theHunter: Call of The Wild and Way of the Hunter. But they aren't necessarily character action games like Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, Ninja Gaiden, Nier, or Hi-Fi Rush.

This trend of labeling something as a clone or ripoff simply because it shares gameplay similarities is as old as dirt and will continue to repeat for many more years to come. Take for example the latest victim of this trend: Souls-likes. As a subgenre of Action RPGs, Souls-likes are *technically* defined by their "difficulty" (which they really shouldn't be), but also has mechanics only found in that subgenre. Stuff like bonfires or shrines as checkpoints, spending currency on upgrades, levels, and gear, as well as gratifying boss encounters with multi-stage or multi-healthbar fights.

To me, this is the argument that will be used by people to justify their distaste for a game because it isn't like their favorite game, simply because the game has mechanics or aspects they don't like. Congrats! Just ignore it. Mono-gamers can coexist with variety gamers. In fact, for the majority people, mono-gaming is simply a way of life because of their own financial situation. But don't try to dissuade others from trying it out simply because it doesn't have X or isn't exactly like Y. As a KOF fan who constantly has to endure SF fans saying Street Fighter is the best fighting game, I'm used to it.

Anyways, call me a shill or whatever, I don't care. I'm only writing this as a time waster so I can play the game when it unlocks. Do what you like, but don't force others to accept your opinion as the gospel. Also, pretty sure I'm the only one who uses the term "Hunting RPG" to begin with, but if there are any others like me who love this particularly subgenre, I have to ask: How would you define a Hunting RPG? I listed several in that second paragraph, but what would you say counts and is worthy of a mention?

I'm hoping the cross platform aspect of it brings everyone together... I'm hoping I can poke the game pass people to use their ea trial and play too.

@Chaos Mana
Probably a better term for it than what I use. But most of the games in this subgenre does have a level of RPG mechanics added into them, so that's why I called them that.

what are you thinking?! being rational and sane on the internet is not allowed, you have to be a irrational screeching dogpiling hind mive drone.

I do agree with you though, I enjoy MH, Toukiden, God Eater (want a new one so badly after 3 left me disappointed) Soul Sacrifice and others.

but people gonna be people and be irrational haters/lovers even when it's nothing but craziness.

I actually loved GE3 purely for the gameplay and quality of life improvements. I know the game is lacking in terms of story and a lot of other factors though, but the new weapons were pretty fun. And I love using the Sylphid (or whatever it was called) to infinitely string my air attacks with the short blade.

*Fight 'Big Scary Thing' and 'Small Scary Things' in boss-like battles.
*Team Up with other players
*Use 'Thing' parts/objects/items to make more equipment/gear/special stuff
*Repeat. Kill 'Bigger Scarier Things' and 'Smaller Rarer Things' for more.
*RNG slams you. You didn't get the item. Curse your fate and repeat again.
*Quit game after seven 'chocolate poop' drops instead of 'real poop' drops.
*Return after two days.
*More 'Things' are added. Kill them while proclaiming they're the best 'Things'
*Do all content until nothing left. Move onto next game.
Bonus: *Add Waifus and tits if God Eater.

Apparently some people are calling this "Fortnite Monster Hunter" because you have a tool that can "Build".

Yes I also agree that this is a Spiritual Successor to Toukiden series, but due to the Capcom rubbish with Dynasty Warriors cut short Toukiden 2. Also Toukiden 3 might still come out as this was stated back in 2018 that Omega Force wanted to make it, But were working on a new title which it seems to be this one.

Can't wait for the launch tho.

even if they were just clones who cares as long as they were fun. Ive enjoyed lots of hunter style games such as God eater , Toukiden , soul sacrifice ect and i really enjoyed them all , do i think they are better than MonHun? nope but they were decent.

oh it wasn't a total disappoint and I did love the new weapons and QoL stuff, but it left me disappointed there wasn't more, even with the DLC. Which is why it was a disappointment as it felt over too quickly I guess.

I guess if we're looking for a term like "soulslike" which honestly I find pretty bad as most games given that label really aren't like souls except for being "difficult" then perhaps "MonHunLike"?

EDIT:
@Thunaer
I may have accidentally deleted your post when I was trying to give it an award. I'm truly sorry for that, and I honestly don't know why there isn't a confirm for thread creators to not accidentally delete posts.

I literally forgot about Ragnarok Odyssey! Thanks for reminding me about it! I'll have to check it out eventually. And I don't necessarily think "Hunter-like" is a good name... But it is what it is and you can feel free to call it that.

If anything what Chaos Mana described seems to be a good description. Since Japanese game devs practically made this subgenre, and the JP audience was the core audience for the longest time and they HAVE a name for it, it is only fair to respect their wishes and call them Hunting Action Games. But it's up to you whether that's fine or not.
