SPOILERS*** Discussion of Catfish origin
Basically this whole discussion could be a spoiler so I don't really know how to have it without doing big 'ol blocks of black. I have also finished the game so there is information from the end in here.

I loved catfish's design. His eyes are so unique. Because they're so unique though they stand out SIGNIFICANTLY when you see basically the same eyes on Roux.

You see a figure at the beginning of the game standing next to a covered cart. Those old school ones where there would be traveling fortune tellers. It is basically one of the first things that happens after you get powers. This is Roux. So they immediately know who you are and that you have powers. Maybe this is because supernatural creatures of a certain power know when another powerful creature is created?

I feel as if Roux is a Loki type character. Not inherently good or evil just chaotic and self-serving. There's no "Roux" character specifically in the lore of the South. but there are crossroad demons. He seems to model that behavior very closely. So what if Roux is a demon serving his "lord" Kooshma. But he has taken advantage of him. Keeping him on a short leash, feeding him when needed so that he actually has control of his domain and gets to live it up as the de facto leader.

Nobody is there to help you in the beginning. Why wouldn't you, as Roux, want to help Hazel learn how to use her powers and get you to trust them in the process. The first weaver in over 100 years and suddenly you are their friend. Also fairly convenient for you to be a fish that doesn't have to actually help and put yourself in trouble in any way.

Then at the end of the game when you give the brush to your grandma. You prove that the whole experiment/gamble that Roux made by choosing to help you was worth it.

Anyway, those are my thoughts in the matter.

The game's pretty much steeped in Hoodoo. Try looking up things in the game, such as Catfish, in connection to Hoodoo. It's a rabbit hole, but an immensely enjoyable one.
