THE GAME
► Plays like a board game.
► The scale of the conflict seems a better fit than the Winter War title. This type of warfare embraces the game's design in a better way.
► Map detail, abstracted themed cards, key historical events and orders of battle gear the game to provide an historically accurate recreation of this conflict.
► Scenarios are plentiful and provide a better spread of content than the previously reviewed title. Played in chronological order they become a first rate primer for the full 150+ turn campaign. However, they are very structured in design and outcome, tending to play out historically.
► With 150 possible turns The Grand Campaign is slightly less rigid than the scenarios. Gameplay proved to be as structured, but expansive by allowing the freedom to pursue the war across the full map. An economy system adds some dynamicity by allowing players to periodically purchase extra cards, replacements or units. Several initial force additions can be purchased at a cost of VPs to enhance the starting position.
► The familiar multi-round battle system returns providing a fair representation of week-long engagements over a couple of rounds. However, many battles tended to be one-sided especially in the player's favour, unless a mistake was made. This will not be the case with human opponents.
► The AI would send lone artillery or AAA with escorts to take a region or not fully commit to units across a defensive line. It did seem to know to defend key regions effectively, with numbers. The tighter scope in smaller scenarios restricted the possibility of the AI making mistakes.
► The GUI has issues with mouse interaction. Selecting stacks, dragging them to a destination sometimes worked, but proved frustrating for much of my 35h. No feedback was provided as to what was being done wrong. Also very fiddly to select units from stacks.
► In some scenarios reinforcement units were introduced in locations too far from the front line to be used with turns running out.
► Historical events that can lead to a premature outcome in the main campaign were painful. One such event caused my game to finish 34x turns into 150, from a winning position to defeat. Wish these were optional.

PERFORMANCE
► I encountered a few bugs. None that were critical or could not be bypassed. These are being fixed infrequently.
► Given its minimal graphical requirements the game unsurprisingly ran fine on the highest settings.
► Several times while moving units or selecting a card, would freeze the GUI and not allow the game to continue, requiring a restart.

SGS Korean War is no sandbox wargame, but a detailed, historically structured strategic simulation of the conflict its named after. While it has some enjoyable aspects to gameplay and warfare that better fits the engine, it possesses some significant issues with the interface that make for a frustrating time. A lacking AI that sometimes performs adequately. Some scenarios are too short and rigidity of outcome is a theme across the game. The biggest pain is endgame scoring, that can seemingly grab defeat from the jaws of victory.

The main campaign was interesting to play and at times engrossing. Against another human SGS Korean War may just be worthwhile to play. As a single player game its a MAYBE.

I wanted to get this posted while the 50% off sale is still in motion, as of 2/14/23.

For veteran SGS players, the $15 is quite a bargain. It might not be the best choice for those new to the series, as the UI takes a little bit of getting used to. But for those familiar with the conflict simulated, I'd give it a go.

For the few who care, the text files can be easily modded - like all SGS games, I believe. I am already getting my personal money's worth from the "Operation_Storm224_Campaign," and there are *10* others. So, content-wise, the game offers huge potential with the ultra-long campaign games.

A must-buy for those on a budget during the sale, and should be seriously considered by all those looking for a quick-playing (depending on scenario!) game depicting the Korean War. Nicely done, imho.

After several more of the shorter scenarios, I am now playing "The 1951 Campaign" as NATO. Today's date is 4/9/23.

This game is simply outstanding.

I am not taking anything away from the other "full length" SGS games I have played, or the "snippet-type" Wars Across the World products, all of which can be fun and worthwhile.

And here's my confession: After almost 40 years of computer wargaming, with almost every title on the market far before Steam existed, I was getting burned-out. After all, I am 66 years old.

But this game has me hooked. The depth, ease-of-use, text modding capability, and historical fidelity regarding the Korean War makes it the best - and only - product to adequately cover that conflict.

I only wish that a War in the East 2 type of game could be released using this engine.

Didn't read the manual and never will; there are tool-tips everywhere, some of which "expand" the unit icons to show greater detail for each formation using excellent graphics and symbols. These icons and tool-tips need to be discovered by the player as he/she becomes more comfortable with the interface.

It's pretty much drag-and-drop, but sometimes it requires more than one go to get that unit into the hex-region; zooming in on the map also helps. It's important to realize that some movement must be "step-by-step" - region to region - rather than dragging the unit halfway across the map. But quite soon it is just so darn fluid that I wish 100 games were released with this design.

There are stacking limits, but they are plausible. The AI is average-to-good, but if one sticks to the vanilla scenarios without modding them in your favor, it will be a relatively stiff challenge. The NATO side is probably easier overall, with all their naval and air assets.

And nearly every unit attribute can be modified by editing the "nations.json" and "units.json" files for the scenarios.

Again, stepping up to one of the large campaign games has me loving this title more and more. There are more chits to handle - especially as NATO - but the number are still very manageable.

Although I lack the energy and skill to provide screenshots in a real Steam "Guide," I will attempt to cover some minor UI hurdles that I have overcome. When I am able...

In the meantime, if you have half the brain of this writer, you will be absolutely fine. It is the best of SGS' best, imho. And I need to post this "review" on the Matrix/Slitherine forums, where some of the world's best wargames are found - and this is one of them.

The Korean War from 1950 to 1953 was a military conflict between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) and its allied People's Republic of China on the one hand and the Republic of Korea (South Korea) and United Nations troops led by the USA on the other Side. Each of the two Korean states that emerged from the Soviet and US occupation zones in Korea after the Second World War saw itself as the sole legitimate successor to the Korean Empire annexed by Japan in 1910. The war began on June 25, 1950, after both parties to the conflict alternately violated borders, with an attack by North Korea, which wanted to use military force to reunify the country. American forces under General MacArthur provided the South Korean troops with the requested help against this attack. On June 25, 1950, troops of the North Korean People's Army crossed the border to the south with the aim of forcibly reuniting the two parts of the state. North Korean planes attacked the US-built Gimpo airbase, destroying a US Air Force Douglas C-54 on the ground. John J. Muccio, the US Ambassador to South Korea, then forwarded a request for assistance to South Korea to US President Harry S. Truman, who ordered air support from the US Air Force and the transfer of weapons and ammunition. US Maj. Gen. Earle E. Partridge (USAF), commander of the US 5th Air Fleet, ordered the immediate air evacuation of US citizens from South Korea and increased aerial surveillance in the Korean Strait.

The US 11th Air Force placed two squadrons of fighter interceptors on alert in Japan. The beginning of the Korean War caused great concern and many feared a third world war between the western powers and the eastern bloc. The game offers you many different scenarios that give you the options of lightning fast offensives, defensive work to defend your defenses, amphibious assaults, but also air attack options made it into the game. What I liked very much and what is striking is that decisions that affect the economy, industry and production that are involved in the long war have an impact. The different scenarios offer a good variety, regardless of whether they only go for a few laps or several, as each brings its own experiences with it. There are several ways to solve the game's event cards and the different situations, for example solving a situation diplomatically or using military, political or economic means to conquer a territory or make room.

SGS Korean War bietet dir eine Perspektive, Episoden des kalten Krieges nachzuerleben. Klare Kaufempfehlung wer Geschichte mag und sich dafür interessiert.

First of all, it's true, I'm working on an SGS game, namely NATO's Nightmare. But if I found that a SGS game is bad, I could tell to the editor and we would discuss it. It's true, the game was offered to me, but does that fundamentally call into question my good faith ? I have over 400 games in my Steam library, and between my GOG library and my Epic library, I have over 1,000 games. Which does not make me, I believe, a "puppet". I'm a true player, and I love good games. And I wouldn't have play more to 27 hours on a bad game. My time is too precious.

To my point of view KOREA IS A GOOD GAME, damn it ! First, how many turn-based video games are there about Korea war ? Two, the system works rather well. So maybe there is a bug in Korean, I don't know. But if so, does it deserve a red thumbs up that will never be changed once a hypothetical bug is fixed ? And there are how many video games in Korean (or which integrates the Korean language) about the Korean War ?

As for the system, it's turn-based, with a map divided into regions that allow you to calculate movement, to place battles when opposing counters find themselves in the same region... Get an idea of ​​the terrain , the bonuses (or maluses) it brings in combat, how this terrain interferes with movement, logistics, etc. is essential.

The units are represented by counters, as in a classic paper-cardboard wargame. Said counters are illustrated with very successful (and telling) images of historical soldiers, vehicles (when it comes to armored units), an artillery piece (for artillery units), planes for air units, etc. During battles, units can lose "step losses", which corresponds to killed personnel or destroyed vehicles, with the consequence of a reduction in overall capabilities. The game turn is organized in different phases : card draw phase, air movement, ground movement, replacement battles (to reconstitute the units) and I won't mention them all.

During the phases (and in some cases, during the rounds of a battle phase), cards can be played. They represent various, historical or hypothetical events that occur in play (but always with a great realistic coherence) which means that from one game to another, the interest is renewed since it is never the same cards that arrive and that some can radically alter the course of a game. In addition, there are special circumstances such as the weather...

I admit that I have only played the campaign so far because it literally fascinates me, especially with the South Korean-American-UN forces. The beginning is difficult, very difficult and it is very well rendered by the game, even in solo, with an AI that knows how to be vicious and painful (in a good way). Things improve and it is then enjoyable to ride on an enemy out of breath until the massive Chinese intervention where it takes a bad turn. The game manages to create this immersive feeling of hot and cold about the approach of a victory followed by prospects of a terrible defeat. the optimization of assets (aircraft for the UN, numbers for the Communists, among others) is decisive.

SGS Korea is a good game, rich and, as already said, this new title is a history book to play, nothing less. As for the price, for the generous content, it is honest and absolutely not excessive. I recommend it without hesitation. Thanks for this game. It's a must for all wargamer (even they also play Fantasy games like me !) !

Get an education and have fun too. That's what I did. I had never studied the Korean conflict in much detail, but now I feel that the depth of this game has corrected that deficiency to some great degree.

I was impressed with the depth of the OOB research, close attention to details of strategies AND tactics involved during the war, the impact of politics and the leaders on both sides, weather effects, terrain - nothing's left out in the development of this game.

With the many scenarios, the player gets to experience everything from blitzkrieg-like offensives to desperate defensives, amphibious assaults, both tactical and strategic air campaigns, the effect of the UN naval dominance, the economics, industry, and production involved in the long war.

I playtested the game for several months and can honestly say it never grew stale. Highly recommended.

Bigger than others in the SGS series, with an added layer of 'economy' complexity.

Pros:
+ The game uses the SGS games' core engine to recreate the Korean conflict. Knowledge of the rules from the other titles, with minor alterations/additions, makes this entry very easy to get into despite its larger size.
+ Some provinces generate direct income to the controlling side while others generate income via destructible/conquerable structures (e.g. factories, river dams, etc.). This adds a new degree of importance to these provinces and a welcomed layer of complexity in the general scheme of things.
+ The game went for historical accuracy (as it should, given the genre it belongs to) instead of trying to balance the warring sides in order to be more approachable or appeal to the mythical 'greater audience'. Therefore I believe it is unfair to judge the game negatively on this aspect.
+ As expected the general visual presentation is good (except for the UI which still is ill-fitted for a wargame) - the menu background, counters, cards and map are well presented and very atmospheric. The map in particular is very good - the terrain types are easy to read at a glance without the need of the info tab.

Cons:
- As expected, the AI is still the series' weakest point. It does put up a fight and tries its best but it's obvious it still has many shortcomings, the biggest one IMO being that it does not use all the assets at its disposal effectively.
- A few of the counter illustrations have the displayed unit extremely poorly cut out. White pixels from the source image the unit was isolated from are very noticeable, particularly on the artillery unit cards
- The negative effects for being out of supply are too light; a slight loss of morale and mobility but no loss of combat power and almost no strength lost even after more than 4 turns (i.e. a month) is unrealistic and detrimental to the overall experience.
- Similarly, attacking over a river does not incur a significantly enough penalty to the attacker thus rendering this powerful natural obstacle (almost) null.
- Despite its historical accuracy approach, I have to mention the bizarre, artificial strengthening of the Pusan region's terrain to favor the defenders. It's not different than its neighboring sectors but since it's meant to host the UN's last stand on the mainland is toughened up to unrealistic levels.
- Basic QoL features still missing from the SGS game(s): the option to filter out counters on the map, a summary of the mission objectives, a detailed OOB list, a list of units lost/destroyed. Enemy units on the map are not shown at the end of the campaign for a clear general picture.
- There are typos in the fluff text, too many for a game that wants to be taken seriously. And what's sad is that despite being easily fixable will probably never be addressed.

What an interesting campaign! original and outside of the usual things we see. The game mechanisms are balanced. Thumb up.

This game is pretty fun; I'm in the 3rd scenario now, and I like the way the card system is integrated into the game, it adds a bit of chance, without being too strongly random.
If you've played any of the other SGS titles, you'll be able to jump right in; if not, the game is pretty intuitive, although there are definitely some aspects that could use some detailed explaining - the rules right now are a bit generic, but apparently that is planned to be fixed.
As an example, US B-29s are strategic bombers and though you can assign them to tactical missions, they will not participate - although they can get shot by flak. The bombers are meant to strike deep behind lines, at targets like depots.
Otherwise, the art and graphics are excellent, the interface is easy to understand, the Order of Battle is well researched and extremely detailed; all in all a fun game.
UPDATE: The scenario specific rules are found in the scenario briefing and can be accessed by clicking on the lower case "i" found at the top of the scenario briefing. These specific rules cover the B-29s and other issues I mentioned.
Since I wrote the original review, I've now played the campaign and different scenarios; the campaign in particular is a lot of fun. Definately a worthwhile and worthy purchase.

A fine game,maybe even can be considered as a good game.Yet in current version of the game, with some basic understanding of the game, the red can easily overrun the blue.Here is some problem I found that if being fixed, would greatly improve the perform of the game.AI hardly left any force in the east side of Korea and NKA can just rush into Busan.AI does not conduct landing with the exception of Operation Chromite.AI let defenseless unit expose to enemy forces,make them get destroyed without meaning.

My pbem opponent says, best map and game he has played. I say, I am still down in the bush trying to find my way to victory. This is such a fun game with such great graphic. It is a war I kind of only knew from my parents' friends, but now I am engaged in it, I am learning so much about this war when I was but a wee child.
