You only get two listening crystals. You have to choose between Feather, Siegfried and Abizboah. If you're missing one character, it's not one of the beasts.

You can recruit the other monsters but it doesn't give you 108 stars. The game lets you recruit monsters that are not actual stars locking you out of the good endings. It's why it's always recommended to do Feather and Siegfried since the game doesn't give you anymore listening crystals.

The octopus wife doesn't count as a star unfortunately, and neither does their octopus kid.
The remaster really should have added a way to get those 2 without expending crystals just because they don't count as stars

Always use one on Feather, since he also comes with Ayda. The second crystal can be used on Siegfried or Abizboah, though Siegfried can be recruited earlier which is nice for meeting the requirement to recruit Bob.

Do -not- use one on the second kraken, since she is -not- a Star of Destiny which means you'll be stuck at 107. Unless you don't care about getting all 108, then feel free to get the whole kraken family :D

by now everyone should know that Ayda WILL still join without Feather. You simply need to lose to the 3 griffins attacking it. I know it sucks but after Eiyuden I did not want another Griffin character as it was very strong over there. Lose to the griffins(equip fire lizard on Riou's weapon and fight alone to do this quickly), go up and speak to Ayda at the northern most area of Forest Village to recruit Ayda.

But be informed that Abizboah sucks quite frankly and can only be recruited AFTER you beat you know who at Tinto. I only chose the octopus in 2025 because the teenage me could not be arsed to find out so many things back in the 90s-00s.
