Suikoden 1 108 Stars Ending (Spoilers)
I'm an idiot and messed up and now I don't know if it is worth it to continue to finish the game or just use a completed save file and move to Suikoden 2 (I beat S1 multiple times on PS1)

Spoilers for S1 (all the way to the end game)

So apparently, Luc died. I must have missed it in the army battles but Luc is dead. I was wondering why he was missing from my castle, but I thought he just left to go on an errand or something. I kept playing and playing. I'm nearing the ending.

Then I checked the 108 stars tablet to see if I forgot everyone. I'm at 100 or so characters, I seem to have gotten everyone, but Luc's name is greyed out. Just like Germio.

Oh. He's dead dead. Like not coming back. Gone forever.

Will I still be able to get all 108 stars and my boy Germio back? Because technically I did get him. He's just dead.

You have bigger problems right now, I don't know if you transfer a save 1 to 2 with a dead character, if he will stay dead in Suiko 2 as well, while the true ending of Suiko 1 isn't a big deal, it is for Suiko 2, not to mention that Luc is one of the strongest magic users in 2 (probably the second strongest only losing to Mazus).

Edit: I messed up my first gameplay because of Leon, so I had to restart my game but I did everything way faster since I already had the knowledge to do so, but you can try beating the game first and download a 100% save state.

If you check the Star tablet and his name is greyed out, it's JOEVER for you. Also if you're going to reset it, be sure to get the scene with Cleo and Sonya in the castle jail right after the fight with her upon returning to the castle I still got the 108 stars achievement and my tablet was filled, however, Gremio was not resurrected until I got that last scene with Sonya

You can transfer with a dead character. Transfers don't "kill" characters.

Man, Suikoden 3 would be so much more different..

How did you not notice you lost Luc? He's your most OP mage in the first game for practically the entire game? Same for the second game, to be honest. Even when you bring in Crowley/Mazus, they're slower than Luc is, and in the second game Luc's Magic stat growth is higher than Mazus'.

If nothing else in the first game he should be your healer.

Sadly, yes, you're screwed. If a character dies, you need to reload your save before the battle and try again. Otherwise, you can't get the perfect ending, and when you get to Suikoden II, even if you load the data from the first game, Gremio will still be dead, so you'll never be able to get the special stew recipe from him.

I barely ever use the S-range mages and would be willing to bet OP doesn't either, which is probably why they never noticed. They're useless when they're not casting magic, so what's the point when there are plenty of L-range mages who are nearly as strong? Especially Luc, who in the first game is stuck with a low-tier Wind rune; anybody with Fire or Lightning runes will be doing more damage (let alone Rage or Thunder), and keeping a couple of Mega Medicines on your characters is enough to make its single-target heal obsolete.

Luc isn't stuck with a low tier wind rune, though. You can swap it out. I usually give him Eileen's Earth Rune, unless I was lucky enough to get a Lightning Rune off of the Zombie Dragon.

Likewise, you get so many spells to throw around in the first game that I'd hardly call the S-Range mages useless. They can clear entire battles in the blink of an eye.

Cleo and Eileen: I am a joke to you?
Edit
Tengaar: how could you forget me?

This game have many L mage options so it's natural do Luc be forgotten, not to mention is crap defense because he's stuck with that MGC boosting robe.

Cleo, Eileen, and Tengaar are all fine, but they don't have the same level of magic Luc has. They run out of spells, whereas Luc just nukes without end. About the most that can be said for them is that they'll actually do a tiny bit of damage if you select auto. Thing is, Luc clears any battle just by himself. Even OP melee units rarely get a chance to do anything with him in my party.

I do agree his armor selection is an issue, but I still beat the game on hard mode with him just fine.

I beat the game plenty of times before and was trying new characters/combos. Using the same people over and over again wasn't really fun for me. I guess I'll have to restart or use a save file or something.

Honestly Tengaar usually ends up being my main mage, in part because Hix is actually a decent tank (being one of the few characters in the game who actually uses shields) and can get some really good damage in with their Unite without wasting her MP on random battles.

Luc is better for dealing damage to bosses obviously, but for general use, Hix/Tengaar all the way for me.

Hi, for Suikoden remqstered on PC:
data0 should be the completed game with all stars and data3 is just before the final battle with all stars in normal. https://archive.org/download/data-0_202503

Let me know if the archive work

S1 yeah Tengaar is great mostly because Luc is locked into Wind Rune iirc. Hix though idk, I went with Sonya in the front and Valeria in the back since who tf uses regular attacks with Valeria anyway.
S2 Hix is mah boi with Tengaar. Uniting until his Exertion Rune starts cooking to where he's doing the Unite damage by himself.

Luc isn't locked to a Wind Rune. You can change his runes in both games.
