Is this good for newcomers?
If I don't have nostalgia for the original games, would you guys say these still hold up?

No, they do not hold up.

I would only try the games if you are interested in Turn Based JRPGs from the 90s. These do not hold up to some QOL things in current games of the same genre.

The story is kind of basic. There are some HUGE moments don't get me wrong. But it's still not the best story. You're a chosen one fighting a bad empire/person.

The characters don't get a lot of development.

It's missing some QOL things we get today.

The only thing about these games that exceed current standards is the music and the HQ/108 character theme.

This is one of the best of the genre from the 90s though.

Bought them and never played a single game of the series before. Loving suikoden 1 already and only 5h in. Did buy it from fanatical for 37€. Which feels perfect for me.
Im not sure if u are aware of this, certain chars in Suikoden 1 that u train and level, can transition to Suikoden 2, Meaning, certain Suikoden 2 chars are from Suikoden 1. But that doesnt mean players have to play Suikoden 1, because the SKD series are by individual, but the chars are connected through out the series, and u can see their changes in the game series.

The is an old game, a classic RPG so if u are here to do a compare with other games, u cant. As the developer already mention this is a remastered version to make it better but not over do to destroy the original version of the game. So this series for me is quite nice compare to the old Suikoden in PC back in 20 years ago.

Suikoden 1 starting is a bit slow, but once u follow the story flow, u will keep following. Theres a main story line, side line, mini games, finding companions, leveling, farming for the runes, farming potch (in game money), u need to build up a good party at the moment to be able to handle through dungeons, mobs and boss so for me it is entertained. I also strongly suggest, u may want to consider to start on hard mode. If u are totally new on this, then maybe normal mode.

Sprites are timeless. If you like sprites, if you like JRPGs, if you like original JRPG mechanics, and if you like compelling story, you’re going to have a good time.

Suiko I is more simplified, but I find it to be enjoyable in its own right. I liked it much better this playthrough than the first time fifteen years ago, which I think is attributed to the updates and taking my time.

Suiko II is more complex in all regards and worth the $50 itself.

Highly recommend to anyone who likes having fun.

Gameplay wise, 1 doesn't hold up as well, but 2 does. The problem with 1 is that inventory management is a nightmare and you only get 1 rune slot (several characters come with a rune that is locked to them). If you do decide to get this though, start with 1 anyway because you get the full experience with 2 via save transfer. 1 is also not a very long game; it can be done under 20 hours with all character recruitments, closer to 12 if you just do the story.

Suikoden 2 fixes pretty much everything that was wrong with 1, and it also has a way more complex plot and storyline.

Suikoden 1 has a few rough edges, like the aforementioned inventory management, and combat is pretty simple. It's still a good story, good soundtrack, and it's got a quick pace and is relatively short by JRPG standards (<20 hours).

Suikoden 2 is a massive improvement in every way and still one of the best JRPGs of all time.

Even by today's standards, Suikoden II's spritework is phenomenal. It's consistently gorgeous and nearly every scene has unique sprites and unique animations. There are very few modern developers who I'd say make better sprites than this; Vanillaware, maybe, but they're also a very different style.

Depending of how old you are, I think that Suiko 2 aged very well, Suiko 1... not very much, the remaster made it more bearable but it still is a very basic early PSX era RPG so you have to play with that in mind, the good side is that Suiko 1 is very short.

I agree the spritework is amazing. However, I've seen a lot of people complaining about sprites.

OP gave very little information and asked a straightforward question. I answered it. I'm not going to fan boy out over a game just because it's personally one of my favorites. I'll be honest to people.

If they want a more refined answer, they can provide more details.

I don't think every favorite game of everyone needs to have more people than it's target audience liking it. I personally feel that when a game grows past it's market that it makes the games worse by trying to accommodate people that never would have been playing it to begin with.

lol you are weird, you ♥♥♥♥ talk about the game 90% of your post but calling it at the end "one of the best games of its genre in the 90s" .... do you even know what you want to say?

the remaster of those 2 games is awesome. sure, some peoples dont like a few things but... this is how it is with every single game which gets released (or remastered)because you cant make it for everyone right.
i dont understand you ... lol ... and i´ve readed quiet a few posts now from you xD. you like hate on the game and at the same time praise you it aswell in your posts.

you are for me like "i hate this remaster so much but i play it anyways because it has some cool things" ... xD.

Prove that I ♥♥♥♥ talk this game in 90% of my posts, read my last post, and then apologize.

I'm just not going to fan boy out and claim it's for everyone. I'll be honest.

lol do you even read your own post? the post i´ve quoted from you is you already talking bad about suikoden 1&2
aka "no, it doesnt holds up to it"
your very first line is already saying negative things about both of them ... jeesus XD.
am not a fanboy either, i dont like a few things either like the weird blur which is at all times present for example ... but i dont try to make it unatractive for peoples which might be interested in it.

your whole post (the one which i quoted) sounds for me literarly like
"it would be a good rpg if you would´ve played it in the 90s"
in my opinion is that a very negative take.

you said aswell that the "story is very based" ... again a point where you talked negatively about the game.
the only 2 positive things you said is "it has the unique HQ+recruitable108chars in it" and even that wrote you in a kind of negative tone ... and then the 90s part ...
was that proof enough XD?

The complaints about the sprites are because they feel out of place in comparison to the rest of the scenario, but it's more like a pet peeve than a complaint

That's not how percentages work and exactly what I expected. That's one post. I've now got an understanding of you so I'm fine with your opinion. I think you're a child so I won't argue back anymore.

ever looked into my steam profile?` think am probably twice as old as you are.
are you trying to troll now? aka trying to find certain "weakspots" to insult or something like that? or are you trying to reflect yourself onto me? because your opinion on S1 and S2 sound like a person which cant decide wether its good or not.

i mean you went the insultive way now anyways by calling me a child, with that lost you the whole thing anyways because peoples which resort to insult others have and will have never right. am surprised that you didnt came with the furry stuff but maybe you missed that part. bye to you too lol

It depends on what kind of games you like. If you're into racing, mmorpgs, and grimdark hentai, you will not enjoy the game. If you're into 1990s era JRPGs but want something better than some cheap indie RPG Maker game, this can be very satisfactory.
