Luca Blight Battle is a Joke
I dunno, in psx he is much fiercer and stupidly strong, in this version, he is not as wild as before.

Make the game more challenging for yourself.

They didn't change his fight at all. If you are playing on hard then his stats are even higher than the original.

Game didn't get easier, players just got better.
Solo him with only Riou if you want a bit more challenge.
Is it hard mode? o_O?
prosperity rune made everything seem easier because the grind is halved. For me i played lower tier/low level characters like gabocha, gengen, nina at lv 32 (to irritate Flik) and did not train Viktor at all. Viktor's team got smoked so I only won 2/3 this way. Not bothering with Humphrey, Rikimaru and fielding under leveled heroes made it hard for me which was fun!

then you had just luck in what for attacks he chooses.
luca can be utterly mercyfull aka only doing row or lane attacks ... or even just single hits ... or if you´re unlucky will just perma attack all party members, in this case are you done for.

it heavily depends on what the AI chooses to do how hard or easy a boss fight is.
and like others said already, play on hard mode etc. xP.
for example; i died in 3 rounds against the zombie dragon in suikoden 1 because he choosen to do frigging 3 times in a row his ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ flame aoe attack. and had barely a chance doing anything XD. so again, it heavily depends what the AI does. maybe you was overlevel´d aswell ... in which case makes all boss fights easy.

It's easier now because you knew Luca's fight is hard if you didn't prepare.

He wasn't that hard to being with, aside from the duel where you had to be very careful against his damage.

All you needed was a solid team with decent levels and gear. If he was hard on the psx version, then it was because you were new at the time, and your team probably wasn't at a high enough level or gear level when you fought him.

iirc your first two teams could job anyway no? Only Riou's team mattered in regards to not losing.

First two teams can soften him up by reducing his HP up to a certain amount before their fights end. The amount of damage they do is subtracted from Luca's total HP for Riou's fight. Riou's team then has to be the one to take Luca down to 0. First two teams can wipe turn 1 doing no damage and it wouldn't matter but then Riou's team's fight becomes that much longer/harder as they now have to do the full amount of damage to Luca required themselves instead.

Exactly this. The last few times I replayed Suikoden II years ago, Luca's fight has never been that hard because I'm usually prepped for it. Now my first few playthroughs, I wiped to him for an hour.

You could say he made you squeal like a pig...

After a certain amount of hp loss, Luca will retreat for the first two fights.

The first two teams could also wipe as well, but as said, Luca will be just that much more of a handful. The Protag's team definitely has to win, or it's game over.

First time playing Suikoden II decades ago, it was rough, but only because I wasn't even remotely prepared for the fight. Later on (sometime between 2015 and 2020 on the PS2), my teams made him withdraw for all but the last fight.

Yes, that's what I made clear in my post. Your first two teams don't need to be as optimized if you didn't focus on many fighters, save your heavy hitters and Water Rune spammer for Riou's team as his loss is the only one that really matters.
