Difference in DMG btw Wood axe and Axe pick?

Axepick lets you mine and chop with one tool (but has lower stats vs the axe and pick separately)

Your main weapons though are likely the maul and a gun so if the axepick can mine 230 and chop 230 then theres no real benifit for going split on them.

I think it has to do with resists. I noticed animal enemies take more damage with the axe and the bug enemies and automatons take more damage with pickaxes. It makes sense since they are armored.
