Anyone got this working on Ubuntu using a GTX1060?
Hi Guys,

Graphics wise I got the bare minimum that the store page tells me is necessary - i.e. a GTX1060. Starting the game with various Proton or GE versions on Ubuntu 23.04 it tells me that I do not have a DX12 card. That is correct - but since I do have the minimum listed on the store page there should be a way of getting it to work, right?
Anybody able to help me?

yes, buy better card. dont use ubuntu. first of all emulation costs a lot, and even if u have this bare minimum its for windows, not for linux, and second one a lot of games doesnt work with proton

Thank you for your constructive answer.
Low performance on Ubuntu is not my problem here - it is that the game is not even starting.
i guess u didnt read with understanding what i wrote, so ill repeat. A lot of games DOESNT work with proton. I remember there was a site (or it was for wine) that u could check which one does. And second is ur graphic. Even if proton should run this game it will not work for ur machine simply bcoz of ur graphic, which is too slow

I haven't run it myself, but reports on ProtonDB[www.protondb.com] suggest you should be able to get it to work (it works on the SteamDeck). You might want to look at installing Feral's gamemode[www.omgubuntu.co.uk] also.

this is utter nonsense. Ive found more games that work on proton than work on win11. lmao. What a load. Anything pre 2010 runs vastly better on proton. This game works fine on it as well. Whenever steamOS releases its next desktop version you can see how well it works. The deck is amazing, havent had any games i couldnt get working... outside some AntiCheat crap.

Again, Utter nonsense. Go look on ProtonDB... Almost all games work. Not lots dont..... Its hell of a lot better than Wine ever was and is always getting better. This game works 100% fine on proton.

You're not using one of those funny budget 3gb versions of the 1060 are you?

First launch of the game takes several minutes to load it does a shader compilation, took my old i5 and rx 6600 about 5+ minutes to reach menu.

Thanks for the support! Nah, I got the 6 GB version of the GTX1060; using Driver 470.199.02 (the version that Ubuntu 23.04 provides).

When I try to start The Outer Worlds I get the following message:
"DX12 is nout supported on your system. Try running without the -dx12 or -d3d12 command line argument".

Since I got this message when using the default version of Proton without any launch arguments there is no "-d3d12" option. When I try to add the launch option "-d3d11" the game seems to start and crash after the initial loading screen, just when the main menu should be opening. The same happens if I use "-dx11".
Adding the option "-d3d10" gives the same error message as no launch options.

I tried a few other Proton versions as well as Glorious Eggroll, but it won't get any better than "almost reaching the main menu"... :-(

Hi, I have this working on POP_OS (Ubuntu) with the compatibility settings on for supported and everything else. The game runs with a few jitters here and there without forcing any specific Proton layer in other words it seems to run with Steam's runtime doing the work. I had the same issue with the game starting and crashing at the initial set up screen and solved this by changing the Steam app from the .deb package to flatpak instead, which would appear to be slightly more up to date. For reference my specs are: i3 10105f Nvidia GTX 1650 and 16 gb ram the game is installed to my SSD and it hovers around the 40fps region on high settings and FSR set to balanced. Hope that helps!

Yeah, you may have to use Proton 7, though. For some reason Proton GE / Experimental has a problem "creating prefixes" with WINE... I don't know enough about the underlying way that Proton creates a WINE partition, but when I switched from GE8.14 to Proton 7 (and quit/restarted Steam, (killing any Wineserver threads still hanging after a minute), it worked fine.

The game works very well on a 1060 at low/medium settings. I have a 1070 and it works really nicely on medium. Well.. it *worked* (past tense). I just hit level 3, and for some reason getting to level 3 caused it to drop to single-digits FPS. It was 30+FPS until I leveled up. I guess they still haven't fixed all the bugs yet....

Good luck getting it running!
