Maxes out 3090 continually forcing fans to run at 95%
This game maxes out my 3090 GPU continuously, even just sitting at the starting screen with the spaceship on it belching out flames. Ridiculous. Not even Cyberpunk 2077, on all maxed out and Psycho RT settings does that. There is clearly ZERO graphics optimization done to this remaster.

i have a 4090 as well and you just need the turn visual effects down to high and it fixes it
Ruin Mar 11, 2023 @ 8:19am
I can do that, but the point is that the game detects that I can run everything at Ultra, and selects that. Well, I sure can, but it stresses the hardware. It should not do that. It has nowhere near the visuals, and ray tracing, that other modern games have, so it should not stress the card out more than they do. Ah well...

Running a 3060 quiet as can be with everything on ultra. Have you updated your driver?
Ruin Mar 11, 2023 @ 1:33pm
Latest drivers. It is odd. I have it frame rate limited to 120, have the graphics set to only High, and still it is winding up pretty high. I don't get it. There has to be some specific setting that is the culprit., but I don't know which. It is now only hitting 97% utilization instead of 100% all the time, but still maxing out power draw.

This game is wacky for sure, my 4090s temps and fan speed are fine, never experienced any game's to cause it to go abnormally hot or loud. This game though, reducing Global Illumination helps, but turning the graphics down further doesn't do anything more, I play at 4k with a 5900X, I was seeing low-end and mid-range systems getting huge gains by dropping down to High, PCs that run 1080p worse than a 4090 does 4k...

Not gonna say it does, but I THINK this game could use a patch or two

For graphic settings in this game i tried it out with all settings swapped between low and ultra (you can do it yourself and use MSI Afterburner to show the gpu / cpu usage and clock rate) and like others already said the "visual effects" setting is the culprit. In my case i got 165 fps low details, 72 fps ultra details on a RTX4080 / i9-13900k and visual effects alone made 65 difference, foilag 15, the rest just 1-3 fps at best.

Lowering the visual effects from ultra to high, rest ultra i could for example run the game at 60fps / 1440p with 50% gpu usage, 1200 clock rate while ultra would turn the gpu to 100% usage / 2800 max clock rate.

Zaris, great information. Thanks!

Use nvidiaProfileInspector, go to The Outer Worlds game profile, cap the frame rate at 60 FPS, set power mode to max performance.
Ruin Mar 14, 2023 @ 8:38pm
Well, I can certainly CAP it, but seems a waste. I mean, I don't get low frame rates or stuttering, I just get a GPU that wants to melt down and requires 95% fans to keep it to 80 degrees. Just some crazy unoptimized ♥♥♥♥♥. There is a frate rate cap in the game, and I can set a max frame rate in the nvidia control panel as well. I have it caped at 120 right now.
Thanks for the suggestion.

capped it to 60fps and my fan is still going nut while the CPU/GPU utilization is under 20%. This is poorly optimized by the infamous Virtuous.

Zaris, thanks again for your research/suggestions. Just turning off the "chromatic aberation" visual effects lowered the power usage of my card about 90 watts and the fan is behaving more normally and the temps are back into what I find normal in most games. Just that one stupid setting. What can of crazy method are they using to achieve that effect, that uses so much power?
max :) Mar 15, 2023 @ 12:13pm
I don't know why so many people fixate on their GPU fans spinning up, it's not a bad thing it just means your GPU is being used. Also the people coming in going "well myyyy GPU is quiet!" simply don't understand that many variations of the same GPU exist and are cooled differently.

Game is unoptimised though, yes. Is it bad that the fans ramp up? Nope.
Ruin Mar 15, 2023 @ 9:11pm
Max, it is just that this game maxes out the GPU without even using all the high level things available. It is in comparison to other games. This game should in no way stress a 3090, let alone a 4090 like some people have seen. If I had a 3050 then it might be more reasonable to expect.
Zilo Mar 16, 2023 @ 2:24am
I turned off "Screen Space Global Illumination" and my GPU utilization went from 99% to 70%. All else is Ultra. Using 3080.
McDeath Mar 16, 2023 @ 4:06am
if you have a custom fan profile at a certain temp like i got a rtx 4090 and if my fans are 100% then the temp is 51c or lower which is normal default fans hardly runs temps are around 65c so i wouldnt worry about it plus i use the velocityx software since i have a pny and lower the power to 60% drops the watts from like 450w-350w down to 280w or less at maybe 10% cost to performance since you never posted temps
