Hitscan enemies are always a bad idea.

But overall it's a good game.

What do you get when you take Risk of Rain 2 and convert it into a first person shooter and then take out the hand-crafted levels and replace them with boxy, proceduraly generated Wolfenstein 3D levels? I don't know, some kind of bizarre user mod that maybe a handful of Youtubers might play for 30 minutes.

But what happens when you take that Risk of Rain 2 mod and replace the excellent... I don't even know what genre of music it is... soundtrack with an awesome metal soundtrack and then drown the player with a NEVER-ENDING DELUGE of game? You get Nightmare Reaper, the quintessential example of "Too much of a good thing". Too many enemies, too many guns, too many visual effects, too many explosions, too many projectiles, too many mini games, too many progression paths, too much slow-mo and TOO MANY LEVELS. Just like in Risk of Rain 2, I found that I was either obliterated by an entire space empire's worth of enemies and their projectiles that outnumber the amount of molecules in the solar system, or I disinterestedly circle-strafed around a generic arena in permanent bullet-time, effortlessly giibbing enemies because I got lucky and one of the randomly generated guns the game dropped for me was REALLY overpowered. Everything becomes a blur because there is just too much of it. The levels all feel like nothing because they are just a bunch of boxes mashed together in random patterns. Given all of the mini-games (which you can mercifully turn off) and the ability to start a new game+ as many times as you want, it seems like the intention was that people play this game literally for the rest of their lives, because that's how long it would take to finish everything without cheating (which I totally did because just like everything else, this game has too much grinding!)

It kind of sucks to thumbs-down a game like this because the person who made it clearly put a ton of work into it. It's obvious that he is talented, but just like how a talented chef would produce a bad soup if he takes every ingredient in his kitchen and dumps a full truckload of it into a pot and then cooks it with a flamethrower for 16 hours, this game, to me at least, turned out kind of bad because the developer didn't know when to stop.
