It could be that the story is about a town or a sword or a villain, etc. Not necessarily a love story or some other human element. That's kind of why I asked.
Is it worth playing or is it one of those "enjoy playing, suffer through the story" type games/
Because the story is bad or because it's a good story, but bad ending or something?
In this game cut scenes are skippable. The action starts about 90 minutes in, or 30 minutes if you're like me and want to rush to the action to make sure you don't want to refund it.
Because the story is depressing.
Hmm, yes, the game is a story of love, lost, grieve, depression, suicide, addiction and madness and all the other good human range of emotions.
But if you don't give a damn about the life of some pixels, you are in good company and can still enjoy the game for what it is outside of the story. A fantastic mix of dodge/parry mechanics and classic JRPG turn-based combat with a dash of exploration.
Have you kicked that stupid mime's ass in the prologue and was that fun too you?
Because you get a lot more of that also in the game. But you also get a lot more of that drama from the prologue in the story and cutscenes and especially in the soundtrack.
The game delivers in a lot of ways. Might be not all for you. But certainly there is a lot of ass kicking to be done and invoking the spirit of no damage run in DMC while listing to a kickass OST, but in a completely different genre.
Anyway, it's up to you if you get over the drama in the story.
"guys is this game story based??"
"I'm playing Super Mario 64, yaay I get 120 stages to clear" this is not.
Watching the reveal trailer makes sense in a sort of "read the pamphlet before a play" way, as it outlines the general plot with just little enough that it's not really spoilery.

As much as it's a great game purely gameplay wise, this IS a game about investing into the characters, so you'll kind of miss the main point of it if you ignore that altogether.
