You did miss something. You can even find out on the store page. The yearly gommage Thanos' people who are older than the number.
There has been a expedition sent out every year to figure out why she paints the number and why it always go down by one. And to ultimately stop her from painting another number. Everything after that, that happens in the group will give you bits and pieces but will ultimately not truly be answer for real until Act 3. Thats when you get a real sense of what is happening.
From where you're at, the paintress draws a decreasing number every year erasing every human in Lumière that is as old or older than that number. The flowers are an artistic choice.
The expeditions set out to defeat the Paintress.
The 9 year thing you mentioned refers to Maelle. Since she is 16 years old, she would be erased in 9 years because she will then be 25 while the Paintress will draw 24.
That's true, you are right. But I dont think that part is mentioned until later in the game by another character.
There is a chance that there are more expeditions than let on. During one of Maeles ‘dreams’ she sees the number 150 painted on the monolith.
I'll have disagree, I thought the twist was very satisfying and made plenty of sense. I get the feeling there is a stronger narrative beyond that game that will expand the lore if they decide to make it a series rather than a one off.
