So all Expeditions (except for Zero) are named for the number on the monolith at the time, which is counting down from 100. Anybody with more years on them than the number on the monolith when the Paintress wakes up gets the "Mr. Stark, I don't feel so good" treatment. Expedition 33 is actually the 67th Expedition sent out to stop the Paintress.

no, the game takes place in an alternate reality France that had a magic type event occur that shattered the world. And judging by the decorations and character outfits, it may be late 1800's in terms of real world time frame but with some magitek influences.
