How corny is the game story and writing?
By "corny" I mean Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts level of writing which I hate. Does it have those JRPG tropes and edgy anime writing and does the game try too hard to force drama with the dialogue and music?

Play the game and find out.

Or watch a "Lets Play"

Or don't, as you don't seem that interested in it in the first place.
I don't think I've had a corny-cringe moment yet and I'm almost done.
The writing is very mature you're safe from the American "writers", this was done by passionate French professionals not corporate yankee nepo-babies.

Clearly I'm interested since I asked for information about the game.

I know that for chronic consoomers like you it's hard to grasp the concept of asking questions about a product without getting spoiled before buying it. The fact that you replied with a passive aggressive comment and went on the defence as if I was attacking the game proves that you're so incredibly insecure about consuming entertainment and see it as a cult.

Honestly its kind of worse because the voice acting and dialogue is well delivered and voice acted and the story has promise but then the game wastes it all with a really really bad plot twist.

I don't think the dialogue is super special, but its not bad and the delivery of it is generally top notch. And the music is great but never felt like it was trying to force the scene.

The LARGE majority of players seem to love the story and the plot twists.
There is a small subset that got upset because the story did not go like they wanted.
As someone who played every major RPG and JRPG of the last 40 years and played those games since the very early 80s, this games story, how its constructed and presented is easily in my top 5 all time. EASILY.

The story is a Rick and Morty episode lol. It's literally just simulation theory

Again, you are free to have your opinion. I disagree.

It absolutely does force drama with music
Still, best written / acted game I've seem since RDR2
It's not Disco Elysium tier - nothing is - but it's vastly superior to any FF
I do like most FFs mind you, but this is on another level entirely
The delivery & pacing of the dialogue is immaculate

It is emotionally salient and compelling from beginning to end.

its a very melodramatic game, quite frankly, i dunno what your specific issue with KH/FF is, but if your looking for dry deliveries and flat speaking its not really the game for that.

Final Fantasy 6 is honestly better. Without question. But for the rest of the FF series you're prolly right. Expedition 33 characters are too shallow and the amount of dialogue and the lack of character arcs and etc really kind of prevent them from ever getting near the level of FF6.

FF6 suffers from having the graphics and audio + music of its day. But if it was delivered today faithfully in top tier graphics, voice acting, and music like Expedition 33 is it would blow people's socks off.

not that japanese storytelling is bad, on the contrary, there's some fantastic stories, but am french Canadian, I consumed a lot of french culture across my life, and they are much more nuanced and subtle with drama, it's very corny and dramatic, but in a distinctly french way that feels fresh in a video game. Story plays out more like a french movie than a video game.

The gameplay itself is also somewhat fresh, it definitely plays like a JRPG, but characters are built more like a mix between western RPG's and dark souls mechanically. Skill trees, assigning stats, so on and so forth. There's also a more meta strategic layer that feels a lot like Magic the Gathering, if you've ever played that. Like, how you play one card and it procs 6 other cards you have on the field that proc different effects from your enchantments and suddenly you deal 4000 damage to your opponent's 20 hp pool.

thats how i felt too, it is very corny in a very distinct way to french media, even the early on black and white scenes i was trying to decide how much of satire on how some french media is perceived it, but it was played straight
