Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Just name it "Expedition 33"?
The "Clair Obscur" part seems a bit odd and it doesn't really make sense to subtitle the part that sounds better. Even in the trailer, the subtitle "Expedition 33" had bigger font.

What's the general opinion on this?

EDIT: Clearly I stepped on a landmine here. Firstly, it has nothing to do with language. I had no idea "Clair Obscur" was even a French phrase, but that still doesn't affect my point. I'll play, watch, listen to things in other languages. It is not related to my point.

The combination of the two parts in the title just didn't read well together to me, and I was just curious to the general opinion.

The trailer also highlighted "Expedition 33" with the voice-over and that part stuck out, so that just made me cling to the other part of the title more, especially when "Clair Obscur" initially seemed like a name invented for the game (which clearly was not the case).

"Clair Obscur" is a French term that translates to chiaroscuro, half light, or twilight.
In art, chiaroscuro is the use of strong contrasts between light and dark, usually bold contrasts affecting a whole composition.

Honestly, i would do it the other way around.
Name the game "Clair Obscur" that sounds way more like some fantastical RPG then "Expedition 33" which is a terrible title for any game, much more so an RPG.

Am fine with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Whether that gets shortened as COE33 or temporarily called Expedition 33 on gaming discussion circles or something else, dunno yet.

Clair Obscur by itself brings up a Turkish movie.

Expedition 33 by itself, NASA's Expedition 33.

If the company wants to keep the brand and tell a story that isn't about Expedition 33 in the future, they can do so with the Clair Obscur and a different subtitle instead of having to keep Expedition in their title.
Perhaps they intend to make more in the world, hence the Clair Obscur.

why? With the full name you can make "Expedition xx" later on when its a success. We dont know how the game end - so evenutually its a new franchise
Clair Obscur refers to painting and is therefore a cool wink to the story. If they'd change the name I'd go with just "Clair Obscur"

Expedition 33 sounds generic as hell.
I agree that the name doesn't roll off the tongue. I wanted to tell a friend about it, but I completely forgot what it was called. And now it's a bit embarrassing to say the full name out loud to someone else.
Its probably going to be the franchise name like "elder scrolls:" expedition 33 is the first game in the franchise. The next game will probably be set in a different world with different lore. So the Clair Obscur will be the franchise name.
I can understand folks saying Expedition 33 by itself is more generic, and that's true.

But the average person is definitely not going to know that "Clair Obscur" is a French painting term, even if it fits the game.

My main point is the two phrases just don't really gel together.

The same as "Shin Megami Tensei" most people don't even know what that means. But it's the name of the main franchise. People just call it SMT or Persona. No need to make things English.
I never said (and don't mean) that it needs to be English.

Shin Megami Tensei rolls off the tongue and sounds fine.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, another game I really like, reads mysteriously and interesting for instance.

But this game's title and subtitle don't really fit together, in my opinion.

In retrospect, I understand I threw out a more unique part of the title for a generic one, but I guess the generic one stuck with me more because the trailer ended with the voice-over emphasizing it with the title drop.
Us Americans always wanting things changed because it doesn't "roll off the tongue," and not understanding the word thinking its a name. Just let them make the game, and stop with the trivial arguments about a name that you don't even understand.

The game being voiced and sub in english is not enough for you.
As a french i have enough of some of your behavior.
We "french people" will not have our langage dubbed in this game, because english is more international.
And i perfectly understand why but still, it pissed me of because we have great french actors and i would love to see it happening.
But no, because tight budget i suppose.
So yes when i read this kind of ♥♥♥♥, i lose my mind.
It's never enough for some of you
Just because the title doesn't suit your tongue you want it changed...
So typical of some american people
imo the other way around, clair obscur is sounds like RPG name, expedition 33 is sounds like turn base strategy xcom game
