Campfires etc
They need to maintain their own fire!!!! LOL give them a cottage and they freeze to death because they can't put coal or firewood in their own house. Please, Please change this..

The cook can't be bothered feeding firewood or coal in, the cooking hut - same they just don't seem to care and then go woke and complain about it or just sit there doing nothing

Mostly this is just ai management. Although i will say the campfires are a little under prioritized. The Builder ai is suppose to handle it, but with trying to repair/build. They get overwhelmed with task. By the time they need to get to the fire cause of being too cold they don't have enough time to get the resources and get to the campfire, place the fuel and start it before there dead. Your cooks will keep the fire lit. It just takes some time to set them up. My guide to ai can help you with your ai problems.

IF ONLY THEY WOULD JUST ADD A FIREKEEPER.

Then my villagers wouldn't freeze to death standing next to an unlit fire and a wagon full of coal and a stack of logs.

Once you get to 200 villagers all you do is run around the whole time refilling fires and relighting them.

The game's name should be "Firekeeper Sim 2024"

As for the Builders, I've gone days without building or repairing anything and the Builders never tend the fires

If they manage a BBQ, cookhouse, cottage etc they need to look after their own fires... end of story. This is just stupid. I can mange the odd scattered campfire.. but your own workplace.. that is dumb.

so even with no building or repairs they still ignore fires?

for now they say that they are suppose to do it. I've tested it and with no construction and low decomposition settings. Along with a Builder ai fully on leisure they still ignore the campfires. I really agree that something should be done. Its just what is done should be in balance with keeping the game difficult, but manageable. IMHO the best solution is using the coalmaker as a firekeeper. Since there under utilized, have a use and forget task, there the most balanced change to make without massively overhauling a system.

There should be a new job of a "firekeeper". Maybe like the barracks in way of management with a storage for coal and/or firewood. You assign them the campfires they should care for within their workhours. And maybe one could add the houses aswell so they just stock the firewood-baskets (because I've never seen inhabitants stock them, just light them till they are burned down). It should be possible to set a priority of coal > firewood > other so one can choose depending on the stage of camp development.

So far I'm spending most of my winter time with stocking fuel for the camp fires. That leaves little time to scout or expand the camp (terraforming/walls) or farm for jotun blood.

In my current test (first winter and 15 ppl) on extended year I "demoted" 5 villagers to a builder leisure/sleep schedule except for barracks (2), coalmaker(1), woodcutter(1) with prio on firewood, farm(2) and cookhouse(2) + warehouse(2). That way I just have to care for 1 fire at the farm (close to both fields), 2 fires at altars(2)/shelters(3) and 2 cottages with 6 beds each. The cooks maintain the fire so far themselves. Thus all my ppl stay warm while working/waiting for the winter to pass.

The coal burns longer but with no more jotun blood near camp and the looming danger of wulfar/blood moons I don't dare to venture out too far. My luck is that I drown in raw meat and meat hunks but I may have to reactivate my hunters prior to springtime depending on how long the extended winter lasts and the hunting grounds are sadly not too close to home since I decided on a village close to a cave with no rabbits around (the constant screeching sound in former games gave me severe headaches). At least there are 2 wulfar dens in reach so I could hunt myself if needed and take the meat hunks back by sled.

Your method is smart for starting out. Since your still new to the game this is something even experienced players have overcome. Winter is suppose to be challenging. As for creating a firekeeper job i agree with the devs. Its just not necessary. Although i agree a change should be made to help with keeping fires going during winter. The builder is currently over tasked imo. I just don't think creating a whole new job that requires more ai to be brought is it. I don't think anyone should tell others how they should overcome winter's challenge, but if you want advice that we can give. I also play on max year length with 76 villagers. I currently built my first outpost during autumn into winter. I have my main villiage with Longhouses and my outpost with cottages. The ai in my village i've noticed when they are cold will run into a house and start the fires there. I have made many servers to figure out how best to survive winter. All i can say is for now the best firekeepers are cooking houses with altars next to them active during the night from my second to third shift(check my guide). The night time is the most dangerous cause it gets colder. This is why cookhouses next to altars provides warmth. Next one is a healer hut surrounded by altars. This one is harder since the fire only goes outwards towards the open entrances. Finally a barbecue. It has only one slot for a villager, but if shifted for night time they can help provide the extra help for managing fires. It will take time for new players to figure out how to best survive winter. Just understand that a dedicated firekeeper job is just not a ingenious fix.

I also calculated on a max time length a full season is 19 days.
