In the straight-up fight (the two hands + boss phases), I'd recommend spreading out your units. The hand on the left seems to attack a 3x3 square area and seems to attack the left-most units. So put your tankiest units there. The right hand attacks either a "+" shaped area or puts tons of random tile effects all over the place. Spreading out helps avoid this too. (Alternatively, spreading fire will replace the tile effect. I used a Fire Starter Kit with a low INT character to spread tons of non-damaging fire.)
Most of this damage is unavoidable, so having consistent healing is important. Amber's healing ability lets you heal over time, saving MP over the long fight. And there are plenty of items to give your characters self-healing.
