I haven't beat it yet but it's been enjoyable so far. Don't expect Tolkien levels of story telling, just enjoy cute stuff and the gunplay

The plot was never a real strong point with this series. The issue here, I think, is that Insomniac has - in the more recent titles - drastically toned down the comedy in favor of a "serious" story. That leaves these games with a merely passable plot and none of the memorable dialogue or comedic routines of older titles.

I can't see how the story was bad. It was a simple one, true, but it doesn't make it bad. I actually prefer simple stories, they are harder to screw up.

Older games were better do to its humor, charm and more importantly characters that were actually memorable. I forget there's even music playing in the background somehow the original is still more memorable track than this.

As a life-long fan of the series, I think the story here was, at best, on par with the majority of the games. I think the reason why people, including myself, are unhappy with the story in this game, is because the story hasn't matured along with the game and the audience that loves the franchise. Ratchet & Clank was always meant to appeal primarily to kids, and the story reflects that. The problem is, the market as changed, and the formula has stayed the same. I personally REALLY wanted more mature themes, more impactful and emotional story, and character development. Real character development. Instead, we got a bunch of "safe" storytelling. Cookie-cutter themes, and forcibly inoffensive characters. I want Ratchet to be written as a person. Not a marvel hero.
On the bright side, the story sets up what could be a, story-wise, perfect sequel. I really hope that was the original purpose, because if they make another game and mess up the story, it would undermine the very clear direction the story has been seemingly trying to go ever since the start of the future saga, since 2007.
I feel it's about time Ratchet's character gets ANY kind of respect from the franchise. And at the very least not try to throw him aside in favour of a different character to develop, no matter how likable and relatable Rivet is.
But that's just a limited scope of my general feelings on the topic. Still a solid game in every other aspect.

as far as your comment. I disagree that ratchet and clank has gotten less mature. its gotten more mature grittier more depressing. Its a good story but its a drama and ratchet and clank has usually written tongue in cheek comedies. but for the 7th or 8th entry in the series it really hasn't gotten stale although I think insomniac is steering away from comedic story telling. ratchet and clank was funnier than spiderman at one point. now it reads like noir fiction. thats not necessairly a bad thing but its not the same.

Replay the first 3 games, there are alot of adult jokes and double ontongera's that kids won't get but adults would. can't recall tools or clank in time. For me its childish, plot threads that are just resolved not a single overall character conflict its so bland.

You miss all the good characters and actual development from those game. Sure they had some humor but it had character something this game lacks.

My personal take is that I would've wanted the storytelling to evolve and mature, just as the people who have a connection to the franchise has.
If you endlessly reboot and recycle a formula that is meant for kids, you alienate the fans you already have, and risk failing to capture the audience you're trying to captivate. It's like they're trying to do something the franchise already succeeded at, narratively. It's been time to mature and grow up with your audience for a while. And I'm afraid that if they don't, they'll fall out of favour with BOTH their fans and the young newcomers. Nobody is happy as a result of a stagnating story. They have the world of opportunities, but I just feel like the original vision of Ratchet's story is completely lost, and what we've gotten is a desperate attempt to reestablish some coherent narrative in a universe that already has one, but has been overshadowed and forgotten by those in charge of the story.

TL;DR
fix ratchet before you make more problems
