(likely) unpopular opinion about Joel [SPOILERS!]

I don't know, but the more I play TLOU (I'm in NG+ right now) the more I think about this character.

I see that Joel locks up his feelings because of his past. But he was no affectionate guy before either. Or, after. Let me explain.

Joel was only gentle to the "baby girls" he cared for when they couldn't notice. He cared for Sarah when she was asleep, he showed his feelings when she was dead. But he was just dismissive when she was kind to him, gave him the present, made a joke. Joel didn't even crack a smile. Does he ever smile? I don't think so.
Joel cared for Ellie the most when she was under general anaesthetic. All the other times he was harsh to her, insulting her, hurting her feelings while pretending he had none.

Yes Joel keeps the broken watch, but what's all of this worth if you don't SHOW people what they mean to you, as long as you still can!

At least they could have portrayed Joel as a relaxed and pleasant guy in the prologue and in the epilogue. To be honest he was never likeable to me whereas Ellie truly is the shining star all along. Hell, this little girl is way more mature than Joel is! She was even calming the waves when Joel was pissed instead of being thankful (that situation after she saved his life).

Joel was playing the tough alpha male but in fact he's weak. He was super sensitive when it came to Sarah/his past instead of at least TRYING to deal with that situation after twenty f'ing years.

Last but not least he killed so many people in the end game just because of a selfish decision. The worst thing for sure was when he killed Marlene! Joel became a monster.

I know the game wanted to tell us that Joel tried to prevent all of this from happening by blocking any kind of relationship with Ellie. I know on the inside Joel was concerned about Ellie when he became a father figure which is why he acted strict with Ellie.
But on the outside, in my opinion, he was just being an idiot. If I was Ellie I wouldn't respect that guy. I wonder what makes Ellie bond to Joel. Please enlighten me if I miss something. Feel free to give me your opinion :-)

in the character gallery there's that bonus image of a situation I would have loved to see so much in the game: Joel and Ellie sitting on a campfire, both having genuine fun.

My conclusion is that in pt2I don't miss Joel that much.
The knowledge about pt 2 (which I don't like at all btw) shows us how bad his decisons in pt 1 were.

Don't worry, I still enjoy(ed) part 1 and prefer it over pt 2. I just feel it is the right way to be sceptical about the character of Joel.

I think you didnt play the game. Or at least didnt watch the cinematic. We first see Joel with Sarah after having a bad day at work. He was tired and in a mood. We have no idea what he was like before that interaction.

The end... dear god, talk about a terrible take. You really think that terrorist organisation was going to help humanity? They were just another faction in that world trying to kill Joel and Ellie. Remember, they were marching him outside WITHOUT his gear. That was a death sentence. They were also going to kill Ellie for no reason, after a couple of hours of looking at her. Thats just straight up dumb. Joel didnt murder anyone, it was self defence all day long.

Honestly, youre culture war speak nonsense is just all dumb. "Man who survived the zombie apocalypse is just a fake tough guy for not dealing with his emotions for 20 years... during the end of the world..." lol. Be honest, you just munch right through the spoon dont you?

.You’re talking about a game… You cant say “…I’m sure the Fireflies are very baaad and never would have helped anyone” 😂😂😂 We don’t know WHO would have done WHAT. This is not like a big universe where there is a “CANON” way to every Character. The game is showing you something and you can’t just invent a nice story which fits you. It’s like people hating on Star Wars because “That Character would never have done this”. Fictional Characters…
