"That voice was you all along." (paraphrased)
I think Ayre was in contact with Iquazu too, but he treated her as a psychosis instead of listening to her.
He's possibly sensing Ayre's activity, but not actual communication.
1: You're well known by basically everyone almost on day one because you're one of Handler Walter's Hounds, which makes you special. He had to work hard to become a Redgun, so he feels like this is kind of a slap in the face of his hard work.
2: He's in a very competitive, exclusive organization and not only did you just waltz in and gain a reputation based on who unthawed you, but you got a free invite to his group right after. This tells him his work is roughly equal to you getting up and getting your morning coffee-flavored sludge.
3: He doesn't trust you because despite getting the invite to be a Redgun, you are a freelancer who can and will come after his group if it pays.
4: You repeatedly show him up, both on an individual level and the Redguns as a group. Despite this AND number 3, his boss, whom he idolizes and wants to be more like, likes you and gives you his unique version of respect and praise.
5: By the end of the game, regardless of ending, you have entirely ruined his life.
