The on paper damage is better, but in practice you gotta HIT for it to matter, yeah.
Try using the basic x6 horizontal missiles for a while if you want the opposite lifestyle of "On paper weak. In practice will be hitting keep away skybox hugger babies 3/4 of the time" once you get sick of split missiles botching the job even on a staggered target.
Also, don't rely too much on plasma missiles. they don't do as much as everyone claims, and they are mistaking "Might actually hit thanks to prox fuse" for "Overpowered". instead use their fast multi lock so you can help your team with attacking more than one idiot at the same time, otherwise you are going to be ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ disappointed no matter how many meme videos "prove" plasma is "op"
At this point, I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ thank god if I see somebody bringing twin plasma missiles when running a light mech.
1. use the generators with a high energy firearm specialization. these will improve the load time for the missiles and bolster their damage and stagger output.
2. use a missile specialist FCS with high missile lock correction. this will significantly improve the poor lock-on time.
if you do these things, with the VE-40B generator and a good missile FCS you can fling aurora missiles out impressively fast, and thanks to their high guidance and stagger, you can put a lot of pressure on foes with them.
TL;DR: the auroras, by themselves, are not fantastic. however, if you build around them, they can be spectacular.
Plasma missiles almost never miss no matter what you fire them at. That definitely makes up for them not being DPS monsters for me. Not to mention their barrages to the same damage as most regular missile barrages, and are more efficient at taking down groups of enemies.
Their advantage over Plasma is they have Shield Interference, and a relatively significant direct hit modifier, and if you're sticking at around 85 to 120 meters they actually hit pretty reliably.
From there you can setup with arms with an Energy Shotgun & Pulse Blade or Laser Pistol and Moonlight/Redshift depending on your bias.

They actually have really good tracking once you understand how to use them and they're actually rather effective. They are however quirky and hard to use due to you having to operate in a relatively narrow hug envelope where if you're too close or far away they miss.
My issue with them is 25 effective shots is kind of low in the PvE context to use said builds given how quirky it is, and so I would tend to argue the ammo allocation should be increased a bit to something closer to 40.

EDIT: *uses the laser missiles for a whole single match* oh right enemies recover so fast they can dodge the slow as ♥♥♥♥ beams even after a stagger, right. The exact same ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ I can pull as a light mech is why I don't use em much.
