i would recommend 4 as i did not like 5 at all, but i'm biased

I would reccomend 4 as 5 is heavily based in online play, which no longer has support. but i would reccomend starting with 3 and silent line if i may reccomend other choices. I've played all but 7 of them, 4 of which released on mobile phones in japan years ago, one of which was armored core 5.

It's weird how 4/fa are view as the pinnacle when the play a bit more like outliers to the rest of the games. I recommending playing one game before 4 or and then V/VD if you think you'd like a more of that grounded style games.

Armored Core 4 and FA were among my favorite games of all time. They might be old now but I think they're worth playing, especially if you are into the discussion of "how to do higher difficulties properly".

AC5 was trash to me, not worthy of being compared to the rest of the series, and as far as I could tell wholly unrelated to the rest of the series.

Start with AC3 instead (or even better, AC1). There are ways to use dual sticks in the older games if you really can't get used to the default tank controls (Involving a certain word that starts with emu). It will give you a better idea of what the speed for AC6 will be like.

I too suggest starting from Armored Core 3. If you enjoy it, play Silent Line (tho personally I did not enjoy it as much as the 3). If you start to really enjoy the game something fierce, explore the franchise. AC3 is my favorite along with AC:MoA (Master of Arena). I have never played 4 (/sad), but again, if you come to enjoy the franchise, I bet you will enjoy all of the games in the series.
EDIT: Oh, this was IV versus V question. Definitely IV :)

I'd say play both 4A and Verdict Day, but I'm one of those oddballs who likes both.

If you go further back be ready for some clunk factor (or in the case of Last Raven, schizophrenic difficulty) and questionable control schema.

I will say though, Armored core 4 should not be considered a benchmark for the series. every mission is very very easy.

Play AC1, it's still a good game and easy to emulate.

AC3 Portable to Last Raven Portable

let the hater hate all they want these 3 Portables were the pinnacle of the 3rd gen entries since you can recreate any AC from up until that timeline even with 3 flavors of Karasawa to boot

You dont need to play them. AC:6 is its own thing they did a soft reboot

Last raven trilogy and 4A

4 and For answer are my favorite. they're VERY dated when it comes to graphics and controls aged quite a bit.... but overall it's a good experience and looks to be the closest to what AC6 will be imo.

Last raven was also good from what i remember of it.
