It's Fromsoft so it must be good right?
I honestly have to admit, that's how I approached this game, only to find out for myself that it wasn't. I could have imagined it after Metal Wolf, an older title from Fromsoft that is really, really bad. I have played all Dark Souls games and love them all as I love Elden Ring. It's still hard for me to believe that this game is from the same studio. A studio that has shown so much passion and attention to detail when it comes to gameplay and level design in the Souls games.

But already in the first mission of AC6 I thought to myself, it can't possibly be from the same studio. The maps are so unimaginative and boring, there is basically nothing to discover. Yes, I know a lot of people say that's not what this game is about either, it's about fighting in a mech against other mechs. But even there I don't see any depth like in the Souls games. You can actually easily shoot all opponents over the heap except for the bosses. The only ones that dodge a bit are other acs, of which I would have wished for a few more.

Above all, I would have wished for more enemy acs in more complex missions. Some of the levels are so short that for some players who are still using an HDD, the loading screen might take longer than the mission itself. This is where the first AC fanboys usually step in and say things like "ah, this must be your first AC game, this one games have always had short missions like this". This excuse doesn't work for me, I believe that developers and their games can continue to develop and Fromsoft should do the same with ac.

I really have to say, apart from the stun mechanics and the cool map backgrounds, the game seems to me like a cheap shooter from the 2000s. The only things I really liked were the weapon sounds and their effects, which are really well done, and the different melee weapons and their animations. other than that, this game just feels like you're working off a to-do list just because it's there and you paid money for it.

The 2-3 great event fights with their big monsters don't change that, unfortunately. They also reused the same assets and enemies too often. So in the end I came to the conclusion that Fromsoft is not in everything that says Fromsoft on it. I think some fanboys should think about whether the name Fromsoft alone is enough to lift every title this studio releases to the sky. I think that's a valid consideration ;-)

One last thing: I can't believe this Fromsoft game again has no FOV slider. This really shows me that they don't care about the players at all, after so many requests for it in all other Fromsoft games, this is just disgusting from this studio. We're talking about at least 4 titles where thousands of players requested an fov slider and still haven't gotten one.
Some players get motion sickness from the standard fov, so this is no small thing :-/

The only downside to me with Metal Wolf Chaos was the lack of customization, otherwise it was definitely one of their better games IMO, though not quite up to Another Century's Episode 2 and 3 level.

As someone who has only very barely touched Armored Core in the past but has had series I loved get changed around like this, I'm going to disagree with you there. It's not an "excuse" it's what the game is, and the fans love it like that. What you want isn't inherently bad, but it's also not objectively better than what AC is, and there's obviously room for both kinds of games.

Imagine liking the games FromSoft makes because they know they're gonna make money and not their actual passion projects like AC6 or Sekiro.

All the while acting like you're the connaisseur.

It's an Armored Core. It's not just any random fromsoft game. It has a legacy and distinct theme that it's following. As a long-time fan of the franchise, I feel it followed that legacy exceptionally well, considering how much has happened in gaming in general since Armored Core was a game that got regular releases. It sounds like you wouldn't have liked the older armored core games either, but game's audience is what this game is meant to appeal to.

This was probably made by the B team considering Miyazaki was far more busy with Elden Ring and its DLC, probably to let the new director experiment. It didn't quite pay off

FromSoftware isn't only about fantasy dark souls like stuff, they did that a lot of that this last decade because it sells like hot cakes.

Armored Core is a niche genre, but it's still a well established franchise with ~17 games.

Keep in mind that the last armored core to come out before this was Verdict Day back in 2013, and even that's not really indicative of the franchise, because fifth gen armored core already deviated substantially from the theme and was fairly unpopular. If we want to limit ourselves to the true-to-form Armored Cores, the last one would be 4 Answer, back in 2008.

So expecting them to bring back armored core and make it nothing like armored core after ten years is like buying a retro shooter and being surprised it plays like a retro shooter.

As an old school fan of armored core and a day one fan of demons souls and the rest of the souls games, I really like this game. Great combination of 4 and 5. The pvp could use some work though.

AC6 is also pretty fine, ngl.
I'm not a souls person, I could only really enjoy ER, and I enjoyed AC6 waaay beyond ER and any souls. ;_; I quite disliked playing souls, I can absolutely recognize the legacy and popularity these games have, but ♥♥♥♥ AC6 felt great, I'm totally sold on the series now, and I really hope they put more out. People have been saying there's the same feeling of passion in this than sekiro, and am really considering playing it.

What's mind blowing is that they made a meme joke game about America in 2004 but it was not released outside Japan before 2019

Pretty much. If anything, their identity has been strongest in mecha games, be it Armored Core, Another Century's Episode, or one off things like Metal Wolf Chaos. They did do fantasy games before with King's Field, but that being their "main" work is a very recent development.

Funny you'd say that, as someone who never really played AC substantially before, this feels like a push-forward retro shooter to me, ticks the same boxes.

5 was innovative because of the focus on multiplayer. 4 was the deviation from the rest of the series. And 5 kind of brought it back by slowing it down and then deviated again with the heavy focus on pvp.
