Should i play this before 4?

You should play 1-3 only.

Combat wise, 4 is better than any other Orochi game, if you pretend Magic doesn't exist. The characters models are from the most recent games, DW8 and SW4-II, if I'm not mistaken. The combat is more polished, and from the time I played it, all characters I tried were viable.

But the game is a huge let down. It feels completely rushed and incomplete, even after the release of the Ultimate version. A lot of things were dumbed down, like acquiring the specific weapons for characters or unlocking some characters.

I don't recommend 4 if you are a huge fan of musou games and the series.

3 is indeed the best musou so far (at least from the ones I've played).

Like the comment above, I'd start with the OG ones, 1-3 and get to 4 only if you really have the itch to see how things turned out

it sounds like a pirate warriors situation; when 3 came out it was pretty outstanding and 4 was only able to make the flow of the gameplay a bit more fun, but lacked everything else 3 offered. Ig ill go with 3 and get 4 when i feel like moving on.

I tried my hardest to enjoy 4 and I couldn't. The game is unbelievably bareboned due to the lack of content that 3 had. 3 is way more fun.

Definitely play 3, I'd also suggest to avoid 4 entirely since there are also a lot of repetitive maps (for example Zeus map got repeated like 7 times during ONE playthrough) with very questionable story that barely carried from 3.
The Infinite tower also came up from gauntlet mode in 3, the difference are no special dialogue encounters + requests are required part of 4 (where in 3 you don't have to pick them up).

Doesn't matter which one you play first, but definitely should play 3 at some point, since it's one of the best Musou games ever made.

3 & 4 are completely different experiences. I really enjoy 4 now but to get the most from it you have to buy Ultimate (get the version that includes almost everything) and play through the entire story, DLC included. Both games do not have the same non-Warriors guest characters so that's a factor to consider. If that's important, you'll enjoy 3 much more.
Get them both and enjoy them fully but if you can only have one, I give the slight edge to 3 because it's easier to pick up & play. For 4 you really won't start to enjoy it until you get near the end of the DLC story chapters and unlock Gaia as a playable character. Believe me when I say she is the GODDESS OF MUSOU OP. You can spam normal attack through the entire game easily with just her default DLC 5* weapon!

I prefer 4 over 3 myself. The combat is flatly better in 4, the roster is better, the greek and norse gods are a lot of fun, and it's just more fun long term to grind and replay. That having been said, everyone who prefers 3 is still right to do so. It just has more love and care in its package. There is an enormous amount of maps and fan service in 3 that 4 can hardly match. In 4 you have to basically remember which maps don't suck to have endgame fun replaying but 3 has so many that you can just guess and usually won't find something that sucks. (That's not to say 3 isn't without some terrible missions. I'd honestly say several main story missions in 3 are total ♥♥♥♥ and there are easily more trash 3 missions than trash 4 missions, and 3's lows are definitely lower than 4's, but that's not hard when 3 has probably 3x as many missions to run as 4.)

I also think 3's endgame mode Gauntlet is overwrought mindless spammy garbage. 4's endgame Infinite mode is much more playable... except it is several utterly STUPID balance issues from greatness, so I cannot really say it is BETTER but I sure would pick it any day of the week.

You can play them in any order because they both excel in totally different things, I'd say.
