If none of them join the party, then I suggest you reset the points and change to increase lp to get lp to 120, if you can't do that, you can directly use the modifier
I've never head this happen with an NPC before. It's not a power-level issue -- I'm far more powerful than he is, and I've tried all the gifts with hearts next to them. I can't figure out how to get him to 60 or higher now. Any advice?
Giving up on that, I went back to trying to recruit Yan Weihuan. The guide says you gotta recruit Li Yuanxing first then go to the Brambleshade Forest and find Yan Weihuan in the east part of that area where he'll join if Li Yuanxing is in your party. So I went back to Li Yuanxing and happily a new conversation triggered and bumped his Affinity up so I was able to have him join. But then I went to the Brambleshade Forest and there is no sign of Yan Weihuan (as far as I can tell, I did everything correctly per the guide).
I decided to Remove Li Yuanxing from the group since that didn't work and go back to Shaolin, hoping that maybe talking to Di Zui would trigger a new conversation and I could get him to join now -- only I can't Remove Li Yuanxing because "quest is not complete". In fact, I can't remove ANY of my companions now, so even if I could somehow get Di Zui's Affinity up, I don't have room for him to join.
And the only active quest I have now is Hornless Dragon >> Treat Ouyang Xue. I feel completely stuck and completely frustrated. I am hoping there is something obvious I'm missing here. How do I Remove at least one of my companions? How do I find Yan Weihuan now? If I can't find him, how do I get Di Zui's Affinity up?
So yeah, you missed both characters this run. There isnt a party cap btw, so you dont need to kick anyone out of the party.
As for you actual problem, you simply need Yi to have 120 IP points. If all your meridians are already distributed, then simply farm until you can reset them and allocate them again.
Thanks for the tip on resetting meridian points. I didn't even realize that was a thing, not having paid attention to the button before.
and yeah as the other posters have mentioned, the southern dlc needs you to recruit pretty much everyone for the perfect completions. and i think you kinda understood, but whenever you see the gold/orange recruitment symbol above a character, do so.
i played my first playthrough thinking i could only have a certain amount of teammates, this is wrong. if you can recruit them, you should, there is zero reason not to
and yeah the yan begger fist dude is a total badass in every way, and he lets you recruit the white mask puppet master girl later. she herself is kinda odd, but she is one of the only ways to get the star absorption skill for your MC, its pretty good
if you want a NOT PERFECT guide for the normal game, aka not the southern dlc

is a guide written by a guy who beat the original game last year. he isnt perfect, but it covers a bunch of stuff in a very well explained way.

those are both steam guides written by players as well as one of the devs?
i'm not saying you have to use them, but if you want hints and or straight up know the answer to the weirdness the devs did to make certain things happen, they are very usefull
i personally played the game 3ish times without guides, and the game felt enormous with so many things to do and explore. once you use the guides you start to see how the game is actually kinda a puzzle, and the hints are not great, and you can miss content easily with little to no warning.
there is a sword chick you can save midway through the game. if you dont go to a inn during a particular story mission that there are zero hints to do so, she challenges a corrupt guard and gets assassinated, you can show up and help her, and in return she joins you. she is insanely underpowered and is never useful to the story..... i still refuse to not save her, its just feels weird that shes out there waiting to die unless you show up
