There are four "story" party members who have optional scenes.
Most of the regular party members are missable.
Something like five sidequests are missable if you advance the story too far or do another sidequest.
There are three gigantic sidequests in the beginning, middle and end of the game that change how the *main story* plays out. The later two have multiple endings, too.
Not really a missable but there are three paths to unlocking the Pili school quest that are mutually exclusive, along with their rewards.
A bunch of the battles where it seems like you have to lose are winnable and will give you technique manuals if you do manage to win. Just, you know, good luck. (do it in NG+)
Last but not least, if you play as a hardass (but secretly good) Wudang disciple you unlock a whole different ending.
The game's made for multiple playthroughs, so if you do miss something don't feel too bad, just make the MC OP with the NG+ options and give it another go.
But yah even now i m still discovering new stuff i didnt even think of like the fact Shang Tingzhu the medical/herbal saint which typically can only permanently join you after you ve completed the southern chronicle arc with at least mostly a peaceful solution but if you picked her mutually exclusive path as one of the three paths to unlocking the Pili school quest one of your rewards at the end of it is a favour from her to save one person( in addition to agreeing to teach Shangguan Hong some pretty sweet buffs/heal spells and a party buff sutra manual thats only available to this path) .
Most players who got to this point probably chose Leng Wuqing but if you hold off and complete southern chronicle with a peaceful resolution she saves Leng Wuqing of her own free will anyways so there is no point in wasting her favour on him.
instead if you were the hardass (but secretly good) Wudang disciple as mentioned before you can return to wudang and discover the story behind Qingxiao's son (Moli) who has been bedridden the entire time. if you ask Shang Tingzhu to cure Moli in her hut she joins your party so you can bring her to him.
At this point if you dont bring her to Wudang she basically stays in your party and is kinda OP for this point in the game barely halfway into the game as she is meant to join your party as the end game top healer normally .
The craziest thing is that the designers planned this as having Shang Tingzhu in your party while you go on the various early mid game side-quests(which you normally would never have been able to due to her late game companionship status) like the Frosty Condor's bitter water village quest chain will now give you additional unique dialouge and new short cut solutions and insight to some of the problems these sidequest line throw at you. Makes perfect sense since having the best doctor in the Country on scene could definitely affect some changes to the situations involving poisons and fatal injuries lol .
anyways its crazy that the developers thought of all that for people using a quest loophole to keep an endgame companion in your party for an extended time.
unfortunately as sweet as the additional content has been after the Southern chronicle update. there is now an obvious disconnect between the main plot after the southern chronicle as nothing new has been added or changed to reflect the new status and companions you ve gained after completing the southern chronicle with the perfect ending. Tho that is what the next big update is suppose to fix by adding another DLC that fully fluffs the endgame plot to create even more endings based on your character's possible allegiances as hinted during the southern chronicles.
As for future updates, word from the devs is that it's going to include a "main story expansion" and "character storyline enhancements". I'm guessing that means Ye Fei (event locked affinity, knows everyone's dirty laundry) and Huo Changqing (weirdly short on content, lots of overlap with Shangguan Hong). No idea what the story expansion means, but you're probably right. I'm guessing that there'll be some changes to the midgame too, more stuff with Yuan, etc.
No, her presence doesn't affect Di Zui's recruitment having her around mostly just add context to explaining the various poison and hallucinogen you encounter on the frosty condor questline and she can help out a few non essential npc along the way plus a bunch of unique dialog that just fluffs the event. Worth checking out on a new play through.
while i have not tried it but apparently Ye fei has a story buff that he gets if you unlock the Pili school using the merchant path because one of the reward is the solution to the eight trigram puzzle in Shiwan Dashan which rewards you with the Spirit Blade of Six Meridians expy. while you can get that manual in all path if you solve the puzzle only in the merchant path do Ye fei gets additional sword proficiency when he tries to learn it and spars with the protagonist.
And yah alot of stuff to cover still for plot like the protagonist's origin which the game hints at that his father and the uncle who raised him are kinda of a big deal. similar to mowen i think the protagonist probably also has that secret origin thing going on.
Yeah Yuwen Yi's family background is conspicuous in its absence. Then again, the two great dooms of martial heroes are are inherited grudges and court politics, so it's probably best for him not to know who his parents were. I still think his dad might have been from Tianji Palace, just because that makes the finale a full redo of the 20-years-earlier fight and wuxia looooves that kind of irony.
Also: I hope the next update makes it easier to find companion quests, I just realized I missed the Mt. Autumnscape Yan Weihuan quest again argh.
Actually OP, that's a big missable, there are some characters who have quests that you really want to do as soon as you can, like Lü Xianer. Everyone else just do before going to Nanjiang in the story. You can check if someone has a quest by gifting them things, they'll either give you the quest or the affinity will lock and you'll need to meet the prereqs (point in the story, other recruit, specific location).
