Depends largely on what you're after for accessibility, realistically. SMT3 has that old PS2 jank to it ,random encounters, a more finicky skill system that can permanently lock moves off of your main character, stuff like that.

SMT5 offers incredible flexibility in that regard.

In terms of difficulty, 3 is much harder, though that's largely due to more durable bosses who don't have weaknesses to exploit.

Personally I enjoy 3 more than 5, for reasons like the writing and the difficulty curve, as well as the TDE being cool, but i've yet to explore all the new vengeance content or the Godborn difficulty, not that I expect much to change.

The writing in canon of vengeance is at least better though, so it's enjoyable enough.

SMT nocture is known for its difficulty and is somewhat tedious to play without a guide for some dungeons and SMT V is more newbie friendly with lots of QoL but both are worth to play, i'd say nocture teach the basics like the importance of buffs/debuffs better

So, I haven't played Vengeance ( YET), but I do have V on switch, and I've played quite a lot of Nocturne on both PS2, and the HD Remaster. While I absolutely LOVE Nocturne ( it was part of my golden era of JRPGs on ps2), I feel like V is just all around better. The exploration alone makes it feel like such a huge step up from Nocturne. You don't feel like you are just going from one convoluted hallway to the next while trying to keep your path straight after the 100th random encounter.

Also worth noting, while Nocturne HD DOES look and feel better than the original, it is still a very lazy remaster. Upscaling the PS2 version on an emulator looks much better, which is pretty sad

I've played both, but I haven't beaten SMT V to claim one is better then the other. There have been lots of little improvements over Nocturne. Such as knowing what the result of Fusions are ahead of time.

Although I doubt you can recruit Dante (from DMC) in SMT V. Which was something you could do in Nocturne.

I also like how the MC gets his powers in Nocturne more then SMT V. Also, MC doesn't get a fatherly figure voice in his head telling him what he should do. Which makes me appreciate Nocturne more.

However, in SMT V you do get guest Human party members. That wasn't a thing in Nocturne. It was just MC and his summons. I think that adds a layer of intrigue to SMT V (for me). Also, you can talk to the summons in a hang out spot in SMT V. So that's cool.

Still, I could end up loving SMT V more. I just need to play through the game more. For now, I'm not ready to say one is better then the other.

I wouldn’t say nocturne is actually that hard if you stack buffs and debuffs every fight. Which you should be doing anyway.

v has much better gameplay. iii is tedious with it's encounter rate and annoying maze/teleporter dungeons. after finally playing it last year, i'm pretty confidant in saying that most of the hype surrounding that game is riding on nostalgia, rather than it actually being a good game.

III was the first game with the "press-turn" combat system, and the combat, while good, is a little rough around the edges in places (Bright/Dark Might trivializes most bosses, and is available very early). The dungeon design is mostly quite good as well.

Whereas this game is the press-turn combat system at its most refined, which is awesome. The actual dungeons (there are only a few) are uninspired compared to SMT III's, but that doesn't hurt too badly as the focus is more on the exploration of large open zones instead of the very few traditional dungeons, and this is executed fairly well.

Agree to both. I just realized I might as well play the more updated and refined version. They technically seems to be the same overall. So might as well get the newer version. Thanks

Vengeance has better quality of life overall. No random encounters, fast and easy money farming, better fusion menu. Nocturne is still good and you can probably get it for cheaper. But if cost isn't an issue and you're only going to play one, I would start with Vengeance.

If this were Vanilla 5 vs Nocturne, I would've said Nocturne easily.

I'mnot the biggest fan of Notcurne. Itis a good game, don't get me wrong. But it is from that era of Atlus games that seemed to focus too much on being frustrating. The game is hard for the wrong reasons sometimes.

I actually prefer Strange Journey over Nocturne. Both are hard as balls, but SJ just feels like itdoesn't try to frustrate me.

As for the topic, SMT 5 easily. It is more casual, yes. But can still be challenging without being a frustrating mess.

Nocturne is rough. For example, enemy encounter inside towns - like what were they thinking? And then very rarely the game like to pull funny things on you like literal one step after an encounter, you encounter another enemy which proceed to critical hit you and wipe all of your team in one turn. The game is not fair - but that's what draws me to SMT in general - fighting against unfair game and winning by clever tactics.

The other thing about Nocturne is the audio quality somehow still retains the old PS2 audio. You can hear it, it feels like hollow sounding audio. Some might argue that the Nocturne HD Remake is pointless and I agree with that. But it's SMT on PC and I just have to have it.

SMT 5 is more accessible. The Vengeance edition make it more accessible with the revised demon levels and new demons with new skills - makes boss fights easier. The demons are much more cooler with cool animation and all. And now they added new things like innate skills which makes party arrangement more trickier.
