Strange Journey is best. Redux is a meh port/update, though.

Sad to hear that. I started it but had to turn down the voices cause it actually ruined the immersion for me. I played the DS version and I vastly prefer it without the voices.

As for my favorite Megaten games, it's Devil Survivor, DDS 1 & 2 and P3 FES (not remake).
I thought Persona games don't technically count as Megaten games, they're considered spinoffs

Strange Journey sticks in my memory even though I played it a loooong time ago and remember getting frustrated with it. Don't remember why but I never finished it.

Got SMT 3 recently and it's a little disappointing. The atmosphere, graphics, and even gameplay to an extent is depressing and tedious. The first 30-40 hours I was fine with but then it started really dragging and it became a chore to play, I just stopped having fun with it.

SMT 5 is pretty great. Never played 4.

I like some of the additions Redux made, but others are a miss. Alex herself and her AI are a big miss, as was the need for a whole new Neutral ending. While it acknowledges how trash the original Law and Chaos endings are, it also makes softer, more feel good versions for the new endings, thus defeating the purpose of how bad they are.

It also totally broke the old password system, so you cannot import demons.

A minor nitpick being that sub-apps aren't nearly as limited as in the original, removing the need to pick and choose, along with some strategy.

Possibly the teleporter mazes. Or the tiles where you fall through the floor and have to climb all the way back up. Or the tiles that move you in directions which you have no control over.

Much as I love SJ, it has its share of bad design choices and horrid gimmicks.

theyre still megaten games, even though theyre spin offs. Same with DDS, JackBros, Devil Survivor, Devil Summoner, Last Bible, Soul Hackers, that one really crappy one on the xbox
Nocturne
Far and away [Digital Devil Saga 1 + 2] ; they're both great games and solid pieces of art.

Otherwise other SMT titles are all enjoyable but the ones I really rave about all feature the talents of both Kaneko and Meguro.

Devil Survivor Overclocked
Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker
Persona 4 Golden
Persona 5 Royal
SMT V Vengeance

In no particular order:

SMT II -story reasons only, because playing it was painful-
Digital Devil Saga duology -I'm more inclined towards DDS1 tho-
Persona 2 duology -although I prefer Innocent Sin more-
Persona 3 Portable
Raidou games -super charming games imo-

And a special mention to Devil Survivor 1 Overclocked, which I find it the most solid Megaten game I've ever played... although I don't like it that much to call myself a fan of it lol.
I only played persona 3/4/5 and SMT3. I'm playing SMT5 currently.

I liked SMT3 the most. I kinda miss dungeons in SMT5.
Nocturne.

The Version that features Dante from the DevilMay Cry series?
Mood is a very important factor that affects my list, but probably something like this:
IV>SJ>VV>SH>DDS>IIINM>Raido 1+2>II=I>P4G>P5R>P3P

Should play the rest stuff more.

Though I'd say I mostly enjoy most of these games almost equally, each one has its own unique features that makes them great.
Given that so far I have only played this and Nocturne I say this one.

The PS2 Version Lucifer's Call has Dante innate; it was based on the Premium Maniax Edition.

The Steam HD Remaster has the Maniax pack as purchasable DLC.
