Do you gain any real edge from the items?

Balms, Essences, a couple of Race-Magatsuhi, and hundreds of Glory.

No, just achievement. If anything most of those items can be bought in merchant shop and you are probably capped on all by 3rd area anyway. For balms, incenses and sutra. Godborn has it in shop.

I would say it's worth doing on one run - none are really that out of the way, and the balms at least are always great as you can go over 99 on your stats (my MC is magic focused with 90 or so strength, 107 Vitality, and then Mag/Agi/Luck are all 130+).

I think the Luck stuff is really handy for later - as I dumped like 25 Luck Incense on Metatron (is at like 115ish) and his Freikagul criticals about 80% of the time without any other skills lol

There was an essence you get around 160 Miman or so too that had some decent stuff at the time; especially as it allowed me to take almost every single miracle in my first run beyond 3rd and further elemental damage masteries (went Almighty and Lightning)

The balms are mostly what's important. My protag stats in NG+2 Godborn (hard) is around 550 MAG, the other stats are from naturally levelling to 150 and balm. As this number seems high, the moment you play Godborn on Hard difficulty, you will not feel the game having lesser turns to defeat the 1st boss (it has 300 VIT stats). My other demons without any use of incense are only doing 2 digit damage because their offensive stats is below 150. It is only manageable for me because my protag is able to farm normal encounters in single turns, these start to drop 5k macca in 1st stage which eventually allow me to buy incense/ balm to proceed.
