You'll get it in time, it's just a matter of lasting long enough.
So if, for example, she uses mazio and you have an ally with null elec, that's the only move she gets to make for that turn.
It's also really important to utilize stat buffs and debuffs where possible. If she's doing too much damage, try debuffing her attack with Tarunda or buffing your defense with Rakaja.
And like Blunette said above, use force dampener when she gathers magatsuhi to prevent her from lowering your stats. If you're out of those, guard with anyone that is not immune to force attacks.
More than anything, the most important thing about the SMT games is customizing and experimenting with different team compositions for the best possible team to tackle the challenges ahead. Often times this can mean trying the boss blind, seeing what elements they use and what weaknesses they have, and drafting a team that completely counters and shuts down the boss.
These games don't require grinding, especially Vengeance with so many Mitamas around.
Use an effective strategy instead of beating the game with higher numbers.
Mermaid also gives you a buff during the Megatsuhi skill that raises the number of hits allowed (so "2~5" will become like "3~6"), so even if they do 80 damage vs 170 damage per hit, it's actually 80*3/4/5, so 240/320/400 damage.
Using stuff like that - I was usually able to punch up 10 levels as you just have like 2 demons able to multi-hit, have some buffs/debuffs as needed/desired, and then keep items or revives on handy and you should be good (basically use the first rotation to buff/debuff enemy - use Magatsuhi skill, then tons of multi-hits for high DPS until you get the "real" moves was my strategy)
It can never HURT to level up characters, Where can I purchase more effective healing items?
That is initially anyway - as you unlock them, it also doesn't hurt having a couple of demons with healing skills; especially as the ones not in your immediate party can heal whenever outside of combat (and, depending on their skill-set, they may be able to provide benefit if you bring them out during combat to replace a down-ed ally with their type specific special skills, like a team-wide MP heal or something).
You can also change the moves on them later to basically whatever, so you could have a healer for the time being that later becomes a DPSer and vice-versa; all up to how you want to build them.
Go to Persona for that.
Some people may find the story really entertaining. I know the voice actors put a lot of work into it.
Anyway, I'm doing better. Having media really helps.
