You still have a Party but they consists of demons itself you recruit/fuse.
By talking to them before starting the battle you can recruit them or even ask for Items/Money if you know how to respond to their demands.
Story depends how you like which is also different from title to title. Some are morbid/sinister and most delve into human concepts/thoughts similar to Persona.
SMT Strange Journey has a Story which makes you wonder if we really are nothing but parasites and a plage upon Mother Earth for example. Its Endings are also somewhat depressive and not happy at all...
In either case, not everyone likes the added school/dating sim part of Persona and rather spend their time getting/unlocking all the demons and fuse the best one with skill inheritance etc.
If you can, try out SMT4: Apocalypse. It has a more Persona Feeling and is an ideal entry imo!
The best part is that the game doesn't waste your time with BS social sim like eating burgers, playing games, watching movies for stats or pointless Social Links half-of which are filler where nothing happens.
So, it's an 80-hour campaign of pure JPRG gameplay and absolutely no visual novel BS. Whereas Persona 3 for example is an 80-hour campaign that wastes your time with completely pointless nonsense that isn't story or combat gameplay.
I've played this game on switch and I have to say I don't like it very much compared to persona games. Maybe because I've played nocturne (smt3) before and this has very similar post apocalyptic settings, angels vs demons plot, and "recreate the world in your vision" goal. Also the MC has this weird transformation thing that feels like power ranger or something.
you don't vibe with it? move along
It's literally a JRPG series with nearly 80% of it being filler, and even that filler is fequently simplified and even profoundly stupid to read and cramped together.
I'm cool with the idea of Persona being the "pre-apocalypse Shin Megami Tensei" as that's what i especially got from P3's opening, but good god is the pacing abysmal and takes forever to even get anywhere.
Until now you've just been playing what amounts to fan games.
It's another divine opportunity gifted by Atlus to shed the mark of the casualry and to transform into a real gamer.
On the Metaphor Steam Discussions which opened days ago, he stated that SMT was boring so he probably isn't interested anymore in this.
Save your breath for when we negotiate with the Demons instead in SMT5 ^^
Why are you comparing apples and oranges?
