Even more controversially, Persona 4 having Naoto, Kanji and Yosuke in the main cast, I think does a good job at showing more complexity in LGBT discourse than a lot of other media that are just like "This person is trans. We did the representation, are you happy?" While, Kanji and Naoto story is less so about being LGBT and more about what Japan thinks about how women and men should ideally behave (i.e. men shouldn't have more feminine interest otherwise people will assume you to be a homosexual, or women should be in positions of authority like being a police officer or detective, even in spite of qualification and skills) but even someone like Yosuke, who I know a lot of people have issues, is if anything, shows that even though he might think Kanji as gay and that is a negative trait, he's still willing to work with Kanji and Yosuke doesn't shame Naoto for her shadow and how she feels. I think had the game implemented the gay romance for Yosuke officially, people will have far less issues with Yosuke.
As for adding same sex options for future games, I wouldn't be against it but I don't want it to be a lazy thing like what the new Rune Factory games does where they just make everybody romance-able partners, not leaving for any opportunity for like just having platonic relations or even characters where they're not bisexual. I have a lot of problems with games like Fallout New Vegas but one aspect it does well is where each character you can romance has dedicated sexual preference, some characters are straight, some are gay/lesbian, some are bi, etc. I think it gives the characters more individuality than just painting them all bisexual. I still don't want Social Sim aspects in all of Atlus games as well, games like Mainline SMT having Social Sim aspects is very pace breaking to the experience, I like it in Persona, but I don't like it in games like Soul Hackers 2
